Matt Kavanagh Named BIG EAST Offensive Player Of The Week

March 4, 2013

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Matt Kavanagh, a freshman attackman on the University of Notre Dame men’s lacrosse team, has been selected as the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week. Kavanagh registered four goals, including the game winner, and two assists in Saturday’s 10-9 triple-overtime triumph of North Carolina.

Kavanagh’s game winner occurred 15 seconds into the third overtime period. He was a vital part of Notre Dame’s 4-0 run to end the contest. Kavanagh netted three goals and assisted on the other score during that stretch. His goal with 11 seconds left in regulation tied the contest (9-9) and forced overtime.

The rookie attackman has deposited the overtime game winner in each of Notre Dame’s last two contests. Kavanagh produced the deciding tally in last Sunday’s 10-9 overtime victory at Penn State.

Kavanagh (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Chaminade/Hotchkiss) leads Notre Dame in goals (9) and points (12) this season. His three assists are tied for team-high honors. Saturday was his second four-goal performance of the season. He notched four goals and one assist in the 13-5 season-opening win at Duke.

Kavanagh is the second Fighting Irish player to earn a conference player-of-the-week honor this season. Senior goalie John Kemp was tapped as the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week on Feb. 18.

No. 2 Notre Dame (3-0) will play host to No. 15 Hofstra (3-1) at noon (ET) on Saturday.
