Mathews Named to ITA National Team Indoor All-Tournament Team

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Freshman Shannon Mathews has been named to the 2009 ITA National Team Indoor Championships All-Tournament Team, the ITA announced Wednesday.

The Birmingham, Mich., native went 3-0 at No. 6 singles for the Irish at the National Team Indoor. Mathews defeated Stanford’s Jennifer Yen, 6-4, 6-3, before knocking off Baylor’s Karolina Filipiak, 6-0, 6-1, and Northwestern’s Keri Robison, 6-0, 6-3. The Irish advanced to the semifinals of the national tournament.

Joining Mathews on the all-tournament team are Georgia’s Chelsey Gullickson at No. 1 singles and Naoko Ueshima at No. 5, Duke’s Ellah Nze at No. 2 singles and California’s Mari Andersson at No. 3 and Claire Ilcinkas at No. 4 singles. Mathews was named to the team at No. 6 singles.

Northwestern swept the doubles positions with Georgia Rose and Lauren Lui being named to the No. 1 spot. Maria Mosolova and Keri Robison joined the team at No. 2 doubles and Samantha Murray and Elena Chernyakova were named No. 3.

This is the second annual ITA National Indoor Team Championship All-Tournament Team. Mathews is the first Irish player to be selected to the elite squad.

Voters for the team included the 16 participating coaches and the ITA National Ranking Committee.
