Know the Opponent: No. 7 TCU Horned Frogs

  • The Irish are set to take on another ranked foe in the No. 7 Horned Frogs this weekend.
  • TCU is the fourth Top-10 team the Irish will face this season and the sixth ranked team overall out of 13 total games.
  • Saturday’s meeting will be the third all-time between the two schools and the Irish hold a 2-0 advantage all-time over TCU.
  • The last time these two teams played was down in Fort Worth on September 8, 2006. Notre Dame entered the matchup as the top-ranked team in the country and defeated the Horned Frogs 2-0.
  • Jill Krivacek and Brittany Bock both scored for the Irish in the second half and the Irish defense did not allow a shot on goal all game.
  • The seventh-ranked Horned Frogs head into the match with a 10-1-1 record and are coming off their first loss of the season on the road against Texas A&M.
  • TCU had won their 10 previous matches in a row heading into the matchup with the Aggies, including a 4-0 victory over Oklahoma State who the Irish just narrowly lost in overtime against last weekend.

Irish Take No. 18 Oklahoma State to the Brink

  • Facing their first ranked team of the spring season, the Irish were ready to go when they faced No. 18 Oklahoma State on the road last weekend.
  • The Irish looked to strike first in the opening minutes as Kiki Van Zanten had a great effort at goal that deflected off the underside of the bar and came out, denying the Irish of the opening goal.
  • Oklahoma State struck first in the match in the 19th minute but the Irish were not behind for long.
  • Maddie Mercado was set up for the free kick just about five yards outside the box. She curled a shot over the wall but it snuck under the bar to beat the keeper and grab the equalizer for the Irish in the 27th minute.
  • The Irish maintained possession for most of the match and had a great opportunity to snag the game winner in the 67th minute off a corner kick. Kati Druzina connected on a one-timer but Oklahoma State’s Plotz was in the right position at the right time.
  • In overtime, the Cowgirls ended up with the game-winner in the 98th minute coming off a counter attack opportunity up the left side.

A Gift Like No Other

  • Doug and Lisa Jones of Westlake Village, California have made an incredible gift to the University of Notre Dame to endow the women’s soccer head coach position.
  • This gift will help underwrite the salary of the coach, provide stability and resources for the long term and create funds for use within the athletics department. Nate Norman will become the first Doug and Lisa Jones Family Head Women’s Soccer Coach. Norman, a 2007 Notre Dame graduate and former soccer student-athlete, currently is in his third season as head coach of the Fighting Irish.
  • The Joneses have a strong connection to the Fighting Irish women’s soccer program as their daughter, Ashley Jones Penn, is a 2008 and 2009 Notre Dame graduate and former member of the team. While earning four Monograms with the Fighting Irish, she helped Notre Dame win the 2004 NCAA Championship and advance to the College Cup Final Four in three of her four years. She was a two-time first team Academic All-American as an accounting major.
