Notre Dame, Ind. – Former University of Notre Dame standout point guard Martin Ingelsby has been named the coordinator of men’s basketball operations for the Irish basketball program. He replaces Rod Balanis, who held the position for three years and was promoted to an assistant coaching position on Mike Brey’s coaching staff. Ingelsby began his new duties on June 2.
Ingelsby returns to his alma mater after serving as an assistant coach at Wagner College during the 2002-03 campaign. While on the Seahawks’ staff, he worked primarily with the guards and was extensively involved in the team’s scouting and recruiting efforts. Wagner, which finished with a 21-11 overall record and 14-4 mark league record, had it most successful season in school history last season winning both the Northeast Conference regular-season and conference titles. In addition, the Seahawks earned the school’s first-ever NCAA tournament berth.
The Berwyn, Pa., native starred from 1997-2001 and was the Irish’s starting point guard for three seasons. As a senior (2000-01), he averaged 8.2 points and a team-best 6.4 assists as a starter in all 30 games. Ingelsby led the Irish to the BIG EAST West Division title, the school’s first-ever conference title. He guided Notre Dame to a 20-10 overall record and an 11-5 league record. In addition, the Irish advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament after earning a berth in the NCAA field for the first time in more than a decade in head coach Mike Brey’s first season.
Ingelsby ranks among the top six leaders in six career categories at Notre Dame. The former Irish captain stands third all-time in career assists (526), second in three-point field goal percentage (.424), fourth in three-point field goals made (167), fourth in three-point field goals attempted (394) and sixth in steals (136) and career games played (123). He also finished his career with averages of 6.8 points and 4.3 assists.
Ingelsby led Notre Dame in assists in three of his four seasons. In addition to his senior campaign, he was the starting Irish point guard as a freshman and sophomore. A 27-game starter during his freshman season (1997-98), he had a team-leading 150 assists and earned a spot on the 1998 BIG EAST All-Rookie Team.
As a sophomore, Ingelsby started 27 of 30 games and led the team in assists (122), while committing just 70 turnovers – one every 11.2 minutes. In his junior season, he averaged 4.7 points and helped the Irish to the championship game of the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) and a final 22-15 mark.
A two-time member of the BIG EAST Academic All-Star team, he earned the Notre Dame Club of St. Joseph Valley Rockne Student-Athlete Award in his senior year.
Ingelsby enjoyed a stellar prep career at Archbishop Carroll in Philadelphia where he finished his career as the school’s all-time leading scorer with 1,425 points and led his team to an 80-12 record. Following his senior season in ’97, he received the Markward Award which is given annually to the top high school player in Philadelphia.
Ingelsby graduated from Mendoza College of Business with a bachelor’s degree in marketing in May of 2001. Following graduation, he served a one-year internship in the Notre Dame Athletic Department during the ’01-’02 school year.
“I’ve very excited to have Martin join our coaching staff,” Brey says. “This seems somewhat prophetic because at the end-of-the-year banquet in Martin’s senior year, I made mention of the fact that I would one day hope to bring him back to Notre Dame to become part of my staff.
“Martin will have an instant chemistry with the players on our team,” Brey says. “He played with both Torrian (Jones) and Tom (Timmermans) and helped in the recruitment of several others currently on our team. His communication with the players is very special and is going to be very important. Martin is one of the bright young coaches in our business.”
