Martin Earns National Honor After Two-Goal Weekend

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Notre Dame senior forward/midfielder Kurt Martin (McAllen, Texas/Memorial) has been named to the College Soccer News national team of the week. Martin scored two goals over the weekend as the Fighting Irish went 1-0-1 in the sixth annual Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament.

Martin tallied the third and final Irish goal on a penalty kick in a 3-0 victory over Rhode Island on Friday. He then scored Notre Dame’s lone goal in a 1-1 tie against Northern Illinois on Sunday. Martin, who leads the team with two goals and four points, was named the tournament’s offensive MVP as the Irish finished second in the four-team event.

Conference accolades also came Martin’s way for his performance over the weekend. The senior was named to the BIG EAST weekly honor roll for the first time of his career.

Martin and the eighth-ranked Fighting Irish will open BIG EAST Conference play at Marquette on Saturday, Sept. 15. Game time is slated for 8:00 p.m. (ET). Notre Dame has an overall mark of 2-1-1 on the season.
