NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Luke Mishu, a junior on the Notre Dame men’s soccer team, has been named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week. The right back helped the Fighting Irish post shutouts in wins over Michigan State (2-0) and Michigan (1-0 in double-overtime).
Mishu (Knoxville, Tenn./Knoxville Catholic) and the rest of the Irish defense did not surrender a goal in 193:42 of action in the two matches to extend its scoreless streak to 234:52. The Fighting Irish allowed just two shots on goal to both Michigan State and Michigan. The Wolverines entered the match averaging 1.8 goals per game.
This is the first such honor for Mishu. Notre Dame has produced a BIG EAST player of the week during each of the first four weeks of the 2012 season. Junior Andrew O’Malley and sophomore Max Lachowecki were named the league’s defensive player of the week on Aug. 27 and Sept. 10, respectively. Senior Ryan Finley was selected as the offensive player of the week Sept. 3. Notre Dame is the only BIG EAST school to have a men’s soccer player-of-the-week honoree in each of the first four weeks of the 2012 campaign.
The third-ranked and undefeated Fighting Irish (7-0) open BIG EAST play Saturday at Louisville. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. (ET) at Cardinal Park.
