Loyola Maryland Preview - Five Things To Know

The University of Notre Dame men’s basketball team (2-0) steps out of the Legends Classic this evening to face Loyola (1-2) at Purcell Pavilion Friday night, Nov. 18, at 7:00 p.m. ET.

Notre Dame’s two victories this season (89-64 over Bryant on Nov. 12 and 92-49 over Seattle on Nov. 16) have both been a part of the 2016 Legends Classic, which will wrap up on Monday and Tuesday at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The Irish will face Colorado in the first semifinal at 7:00 p.m. ET (ESPN2), then face either Texas or Northwestern the next day.

FIVE THINGS TO KNOW – NOTRE DAME vs. LOYOLA MARYLAND:

1. LOYOLA MARYLAND AT A GLANCE:

Loyola Maryland is a Roman Catholic, Jesuit private university located in Baltimore, Maryland with an enrollment of just over 6,000 students.

The Greyhounds are a member of the Patriot League. Head coach G.G. Smith is the son of Memphis head coach Tubby Smith and has been the head coach of the Greyhounds for the past three seasons. Loyola Maryland last appeared in the NCAA tournament at the end of the 2011-12 season.

Loyola Maryland finished with a 9-20 record last season (8-10 in the Patriot League) and has started 2016-17 with a 1-2 record, suffering two close losses at Duquense (65-60) and LIU Brooklyn (65-61) sandwiched around a victory over Millersville (79-66). Andre Walker (15.3 ppg) and Jarred Jones (14.3 ppg) lead the Greyhounds in scoring.

2. NOTRE DAME vs. LOYOLA MARYLAND SERIES HISTORY:

Notre Dame and Loyola Maryland will be meeting for the fifth time on Friday evening and the first since the 1996 season. The Irish and Greyhounds met three times from 1995-96, with the only other meeting occurring in the 1985 season, a one-point Irish victory at Purcell Pavilion.

In the most recent meeting during the 1996 season, All-American Pat Garrity led the Irish with 27 points and 10 rebounds in a 92-75 victory as the Irish shot 57 percent from the field.

3. IRISH OFFENSE ROLLING THUS FAR IN 2016-17:

Notre Dame has scored 181 points in the first two games of the season, tied for the second-best in the Mike Brey era. The Irish scored 211 points in the first two games of 2000-01 and 181 points in the first two contests of 2009-10.

4. CULTURE OF PASSING CONTINUES:

Notre Dame’s ‘Culture of Passing’ has been on display over the first two games of the 2016-17 season. The Irish have dished out 38 assists on 62 made field goals, including 23 assists on 32 field goals in the win over Seattle.

That mentality of sharing the ball contributed to six Irish players reaching double figures in points against Seattle (Bonzie Colson 16, V.J. Beachem 16, Matt Farrell 13, Steve Vasturia 13, Rex Pflueger 12 and T.J. Gibbs (11).

5. LEGENDS CLASSIC UPDATE:
