NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Notre Dame women’s lacrosse sophomore Lindsay Powell suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in her left knee during a Monday (April 30) afternoon practice and will miss the upcoming BIG EAST Championship, head coach Christine Halfpenny announced on Thursday afternoon.
The Honeoye Falls, N.Y., native, who leads the Irish in goals with 44 and was named to the all-BIG EAST second team on Wednesday night, tore her right ACL last season and missed all of her freshman campaign recovering from the injury.
Powell put together an impressive regular season, scoring three or more goals in 10 contests, including a string of four straight to open the year. She earned her first career spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll earlier this week after scoring six goals and scooping up five draw controls in two games last week.
“As a staff and a team we are all sad for Lindsay,” said Halfpenny. “My heart goes out to her for having to suffer this injury twice. It’s tough to have it once, but to suffer it twice is unthinkable. We are already helping her get on the road to recovery and we know she will come back stronger just as she did the first time around.”
Notre Dame (13-3, 6-2 BE) opens the BIG EAST Championship on Thursday night when it meets Loyola (Md.) in the semifinals. The contest can be seen nationally on CBS Sports Network.
