Lacrosse Rallies For A 10-8 Win Over Pennsylvania

Notre Dame, Ind. – Senior attackman Tom Glatzel (Ellicott City, Md.) scored three goals to lead the Notre Dame Fighting Irish lacrosse team to a come-from-behind 10-8 win over the University of Pennsylvania on Sunday afternoon at the Loftus Sports Center.

Glatzel got help from teammates Steve Bishko (Sr., West Islip, N.Y.) and Devin Ryan (Jr. Kensington, Md.) as each scored a pair of goals to pace the Irish. Penn’s Peter Scott scored two goals to lead the Quaker offense.

The win improves Notre Dame to 2-0 on the season while Penn falls to 0-1 after its’ season opener.

The two teams traded first period goals as Todd Minerly put Penn ahead 1-0 at the 11:31 mark. David Ulrich (Sr., Baltimore, Md.), who also added a pair of assists, tied the game at 6:44 only to see Penn get the final goal of the quarter when Scott Solow beat Notre Dame goalkeeper Kirk Howell (Sr., Nashville, Tenn.) with 14 seconds left in the first.

Ryan tied the game at 14:30 of the second stanza, before Penn ran off three straight goals. Scott broke the tie and then gave Penn a 4-2 lead with two goals at 13:41 and 9:15. Alex Kopicki upped that lead to 5-2 at 6:56 before Notre Dame’s man-up teams changed the momentum.

Glatzel got his first of the game with a man-advantage at 5:46 and Chris Young cut the lead to one just 19 seconds later. The second quarter ended with Penn leading 5-4.

Ryan sandwiched his second goal between Quaker goals by Mike Iannacone and Adam Solow, before Bishko and Glatzel took over the game.

With Penn leading 7-5, the Irish duo each scored twice in a 4:07 span to put Notre Dame ahead 9-7.

Bishko got his first at 7:32 and Glatzel scored with Notre Dame down a man at 6:51 to even the score at 7-7. The senior attackman put Notre Dame ahead, 8-7, with 3:52 left in the third and Bishko got the eventual game-winner just 27 seconds later at 3:25.

Penn’s Kevin Cadin closed out the scoring in the third quarter at 1:43 to cut Notre Dame’s lead to 9-8 heading into the final 15 minutes.

Notre Dame’s defense tightened in the final quarter allowing Penn just five shots on goal. Irish attackman Jon Harvey (Sr., Winchester, Mass.) closed out the scoring at 6:06 for the final score of 10-8.

The Irish outshot the Quakers, 51-24 in the game. Howell made 10 saves in goal for the Irish and Penn’s Ryan Kelly had 16.

Notre Dame returns to action on Friday, March 9 when the Irish travel to Rutgers for a 3:00 p.m. game.
