Kimmel Sets Program Discus Record In Day Two Of Joe Walker Invitational

OXFORD, Miss. – A pair of Irish claimed victories on the second and final day of action at the Joe Walker Classic Saturday as graduate student Maura Kimmel won the women’s discus and freshman Alaina Brady captured the heptathlon title to lead Notre Dame.

Kimmel turned in a school-record performance as she registered a mark of 55.63 meters. Brady also etched her name in the Notre Dame top 10 rankings with her point total of 5,137 in her first collegiate heptathlon. Her 5,137 points ranks fourth on the all-time Irish charts.

Freshman Madison Schmidt also had an impressive debut in the heptathlon, finishing fourth at the Joe Walker Classic with 4,791 points. Schmidt’s 4,791 points move her into fifth place on Notre Dame’s all-time heptathlon chart.

The Irish notched a couple of other podium finishes in men’s discus and women’s high jump. Michael Shoaf placed third in discus with a distance of 50.16m and Sarah Flight cleared 1.60m in the high jump to take third in the event.
