Keys To The Meet: ACC Championships

ATLANTA — The University of Notre Dame track and field team heads to Georgia Tech for the Atlantic Coast Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships from May 12-14 at the George C. Griffin Track.

The Irish, which enter the meet with a total of 12 individual ACC titles between indoor and outdoor track and field, are in search of their first team ACC conference championship. The program has won 356 individual conference titles all-time.

What to Watch

Competition begins with the field events on Friday as senior school record holder Anthony Shivers and freshmen Logan Kusky and Shae Watkins throw in the hammer. Freshman Abbey Kapitan will compete in the hammer throw on the women’s side.

Freshman Kassadee Ifft will jump in the pole vault, junior Brett Whalen will compete in the javelin, and junior Rachel Rhodes will begin the women’s heptathlon.

Friday’s races will be highlighted by the men’s and women’s 1,500m preliminaries as well as the men’s and women’s 10,000m finals.

Graduate student Danielle Aragon, seniors Jacob Dumford and Christopher Marco, junior Jessica Harris and freshman Ryan Schweizer each will race in the 1,500m and look to advance to the final on Sunday.

After recording the fastest 10,000m in the world in 2017 at the Stanford Invitational, sophomore Anna Rohrer will look to win her third ACC title of the 2016-17 school year in the 10,000m. Rohrer will be joined by graduate student Kathleen Darling and juniors Kaitlin Frei, Alexa Pelletier, Brent Kennedy and Kevin Pulliam.

Junior Jordan Shead and freshman Grace Cronin will race in the 400m hurdles preliminaries, followed by junior Drake Stimson in the men’s 400m hurdles.

The Irish have four athletes competing in the 200m dash, including sophomores Zachary Zajdel and Kyla Lewis and freshmen Troy Pride Jr. and Michaela Butler.

Conference Championship History

Notre Dame has won 33 team conference championships (indoor and outdoor), including 24 on the men’s side and nine on the women’s side. In outdoor, the men own eight team titles, while the women have won two.

The most recent men’s team’s outdoor conference championship came in 2012 in the BIG EAST (153 points), while the women won their last conference title as a team in their final season in the BIG EAST in 2013 (141 points). Both the men’s and women’s squads won the indoor and the outdoor conference championships that year.

The Notre Dame men have finished third (2014), ninth (2015) and 11th (2016), and the women have placed second (2014), fifth (2015) and fifth (2016), respectively, since joining the ACC.
