NOTRE DAME, Ind. – A day after going 12-4 in singles action, the Notre Dame men’s tennis team suffered five heartbreaking three-set losses on day three of the Tom Fallon Invitational at the Eck Tennis Center.

Four Irish players opened up their Sunday matches with first-set wins. However, all four opponents battled back to win the second set and the tiebreaker. Ryan Bandy fell to Illinois State’s Alex Pelaez, 1-6, 6-3, 11-9, Michael Moore lost to Tuomas Manner of Illinois State, 4-6, 6-3, 10-6, Wyatt McCoy suffered defeat at the hands of Western Michigan’s Nadin Indre, 3-6, 6-3, 10-7 and Spencer Talmadge lost to Ali Shabib of Cleveland State, 3-6, 6-2, 11-9.

Billy Pecor lost the first set to Cleveland State’s Ali Shabib, 6-4, before rallying to win set two, 6-4. Shabib claimed the tiebreaker, 11-9.

Three Notre Dame players earned wins on Sunday to close out the weekend. Freshman Michael Fredericka concluded the weekend undefeated in singles action, knocking off Illinois State’s Skip Span, 6-4, 5-7, 10-6. Douglas Barnard and Daven Brodess concluded the weekend on a strong note with a pair of straight-set victories. Barnard took down Marquette’s Thibault Troude, 7-5, 6-2, while Brodess defeated the Golden Eagles’ David Packowitz, 6-4, 6-4.

A day after losing three out of four doubles matches, the Irish reversed course and won three of four doubles matches on Sunday. Pecor and Talmadge handled Western Michigan’s Simon Blomberg and Nadin Indre, 8-2, while Fredericka and Barnard took down Illinois State’s Muddappa Appanervanda and Jacob Wilson, 8-4. Bandy and Moros claimed a tight 9-7 victory over Marquette’s Otavio Perim and James Stark. McCoy and Moore suffered the lone doubles loss for the Irish, losing a close 9-8 contest to Tuomas Manner and Alex Pelaez of Illinois State.

On the weekend the Irish went 22-10 in singles play and 7-5 in doubles.

Notre Dame next heads to Tulsa, Okla., for the ITA All-American Championships on October 6-9.

LAND ROVER NAPA VALLEY TENNIS CLASSIC

ST. HELENA, Calif. – Notre Dame senior Samuel Keeton took a perfect 3-0 record into the quarterfinals of the Land Rover Napa Valley Tennis Classic on Sunday before falling to USTA Junior star Alexios Halebian, 10-1.

The quarterfinals appearance wrapped up a strong weekend for the Kansas City, Mo., native, who defeated talented players from Tennessee and the USTA. Keeton went 3-1 in singles and 1-0 in doubles while in California.

Sophomore Greg Andrews fell victim to Halebian earlier in the day in a close match, taking the junior to a tiebreaker in set one before falling, 7-6 (2). Andrews lost set two, 6-4.

Halebian advanced all the way to the semifinals after knocking off Andrews and Keeton.

On the weekend, the Irish went 4-6 in singles and 1-0 in doubles.
