April 22, 2013

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – John Scioscia, a junior attackman on the Notre Dame men’s lacrosse team, has been named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week. Scioscia tallied four goals and one assist in Saturday’s 13-9 win over No. 19 Villanova.

Scioscia (Summit, N.J./Summit) netted all four goals in the second half during a 9-3 Irish run, which overturned a 6-4 Villanova lead. His first goal cut the Wildcat lead to one (6-5) and his second tally put the Irish up 8-6. After Villanova climbed back to within one late in the fourth quarter, Scioscia scored to make it 11-9. He also deposited the final goal of the game and picked up two ground balls.

Scioscia has scored 12 goals in the last four games. He has 14 goals and two assists this season.

This is the first BIG EAST player-of-the-week honor for Scioscia. He is the fourth Fighting Irish player to be tapped as a conference player of the week this season. Jim Marlatt (Jr./M) and Matt Kavanagh (Fr./A) earned offensive player-of-the-week accolades Feb. 18 and March 4, respectively. John Kemp (Sr./G) was named the league’s defensive player of the week on Feb. 18.

Notre Dame (10-2, 4-1) is up to No. 1 in this week’s Nike/Inside Lacrosse media poll. The Fighting Irish will conclude the regular season Saturday against No. 7 Syracuse in the Konica Minolta Big City Classic. Faceoff is schedule for 6:30 p.m. (ET) at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. The game can be seen live on ESPNU and WatchESPN.com.
