John Scioscia Named ACC Offensive Player Of The Week

May 6, 2014

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – After tallying a career-high eight points on six goals and two assists in Saturday’s 18-17 win over Army, Notre Dame senior attackman John Scioscia (Summit, N.J./Summit) has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week.

The six goals tied a career-best mark for Scioscia and the eight points were one shy of matching the program record. Arguably his biggest play of the game occurred in the final minute when he forced an Army turnover, picked up the ground ball and assisted on Conor Doyle’s game winner.

Scioscia also delivered late with the goal that tied the game 16-16 with three minutes left to play. He netted two goals during a 4-0 Notre Dame run that reversed a 7-5 deficit and he also scored with five seconds left in the third quarter to bring the Irish to within a goal (14-13). Scioscia’s other two scores gave Notre Dame two-goal leads (3-1 & 11-9).

“We executed as a team really well,” Scioscia said after the win over the Black Knights. “Our transition game was unstoppable all day. I found myself open on the inside a couple times and Lubo (Eddy Lubowicki), Kav (Matt Kavanagh) and (Conor) Doyle were all able to find me. I don’t think we did anything different, guys just had their heads up at the right time and I was open.”

Scioscia has 21 goals and four assists this season. He is the second Fighting Irish player to earn ACC player-of-the-week honors. Senior Stephen O’Hara was named the league’s defensive player of the week on March 18.

Sixth-seeded Notre Dame (9-5) will play host to Harvard (10-6) Saturday in the first round of the NCAA Championship. Faceoff is slated for 2:30 p.m. (ET) at Arlotta Stadium. The contest can be seen on ESPNU and WatchESPN.
