John Michael Bertrand Named Perfect Game Preseason All-American

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Notre Dame baseball left-handed pitcher John Michael Bertrand was named a third team preseason All-American Wednesday morning by Perfect Game. Bertrand returns for his second season with the Irish after transferring from Furman prior to the 2021 season.

In his first season with the Irish, he was the workhorse for the Irish pitching staff as the top starter throughout the season. He finished the season with 92.2 innings pitched, 8-2 record with a 3.21 ERA, 68 strikeouts and three complete games. Bertrand led the Irish in innings pitched, wins, strikeouts and complete games in 2021. The three complete games was the top mark in the ACC and he ranked second in the conference in wins and third in innings pitched.

After the regular season, he earned first team All-ACC honors. In the South Bend Regional, he tossed his first complete game shutout to give the Irish the win over Central Michigan. It was the first postseason complete game shutout for an Irish pitcher since Danny Tamayo in a 7-0 win against Mississippi State back in 2000. The performance against Central Michigan landed Bertrand on the South Bend Regional All-Tournament Team.

Bertrand and the Irish return to the diamond for the 2022 season opener against Manhattan on Feb. 18. The season opener will be held in DeLand, Florida and is set for a 7 p.m. ET first pitch.
