John Kemp Named BIG EAST Defensive Player Of The Week

April 16, 2012

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Notre Dame junior goalie John Kemp has been named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week for men’s lacrosse. Kemp made 13 saves in Sunday’s 9-7 league victory at Georgetown.

Kemp (Potomac, Md./Georgetown Prep) and the Notre Dame defense held the Hoyas without a goal for 30 minutes from the 6:47 mark of the second quarter until the 8:13 mark of the fourth quarter. The Fighting Irish scored six straight goals during that stretch. Kemp allowed just two goals in the final 36:47 of the contest en route to Notre Dame’s eighth straight victory.

This is Kemp’s second defensive player-of-the-week honor from the league this season. He also garnered the accolade on Feb. 20. Kemp was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week twice last season.

Kemp ranks first nationally in both goals-against average (5.54) and save percentage (.663). He is 12th in saves per game (11.0).

The fourth-ranked Fighting Irish (9-1, 4-0) return to action at 5:30 p.m. (ET) Saturday at No. 11 Villanova (8-4, 4-0). The key BIG EAST clash will be aired live on ESPNU.
