John Kemp And David Earl Receive BIG EAST Weekly Honors

April 12, 2011

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Notre Dame sophomore goalie John Kemp has been named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week for men’s lacrosse, while senior midfielder David Earl was selected to the conference’s weekly honor roll. The duo helped the Fighting Irish to a 7-6 win over Georgetown on Sunday.

Kemp made 12 saves against the Hoyas to improve his record to 8-0 this season. Kemp and the Irish defense held the Georgetown offense, which entered the contest averaging 11.85 goals per game, to just six goals. That was the lowest scoring output of the season for the Hoyas. Kemp ranks second nationally in save percentage (.626) and he is third in goals-against average (6.13).

This is Kemp’s first BIG EAST player-of-the-week accolade. He has been named to the league’s weekly honor roll twice (March 14 & March 28). The sophomore is the fourth Irish player to be selected as a BIG EAST player of the week this season. Zach Brenneman (Sr./M) and Sean Rogers (Jr./A) were named the offensive player of the week on Feb. 21 and March 28, respectively. Kevin Ridgway (Sr./D) was tabbed as the defensive player of the week on Feb. 28.

Earl had a hand in three of Notre Dame’s seven goals in the win over Georgetown as he tallied two goals and an assist. Earl tied the game (3-3) with his first goal of the day and he then assisted on the score that put the Irish up 4-3. He gave Notre Dame a 6-5 lead in the early stages of the fourth quarter with his second goal.

This marked the second time this season Earl has been named to the BIG EAST weekly honor roll. He also received the accolade on March 7. Four Fighting Irish players have combined for six BIG EAST honor roll citations this season.

Villanova sophomore attackman Jack Rice was named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week.

The second-ranked Fighting Irish (8-0) will return to action on Saturday when they play host to St. John’s (4-6) in BIG EAST play. Opening faceoff against the Red Storm is slated for 7:00 p.m. (ET) at Arlotta Stadium.
