Jillian Byers Named BIG EAST Offensive Player Of The Week

Notre Dame, Ind. – Junior attack standout Jillian Byers (Northport, N.Y.) has been selected as the BIG EAST offensive player of the week for the week ending March 30, 2008.

Byers helped lead the Irish to a 2-0 week by scoring 11 goals and adding a pair of assists for a 13 points on the week. She also added one ground ball; seven draw controls and one caused turnover during the week. The 13-point week gave Byers 204 points in her career and makes her just the third player in Notre Dame history to go over 200 points in her career. She currently trails Crysti Foote `06 (237) and Caitlin McKinney (Sr., Lafayette Hill, Pa.) who has 213 in her career.

With nine goals in the two games, the two-time, first team all-BIG EAST selection, now has 161 for her career and that ties her with Foote for first on Notre Dame’s all-time goal-scoring list.

On March 25, Byers scored four goals with one assist for five points in the 14-13 win over the Hofstra Pride. She added three draw controls and one caused turnover in the victory.

Notre Dame closed the week on Saturday, March 29 with a BIG EAST contest at the University of Connecticut. There, Byers led the way with a career-high seven goals and equaled her season high with eight points in an 18-11 win over the Huskies. She also led the team with four draw controls and grabbed one ground ball in the victory.

For the season, Byers leads Notre Dame in scoring with 49 goals and 11 assists for 60 points in 11 games. Her 37 draw controls are a career high and lead the Irish in that category. In 47 career games, Byers now has 161 goals and 43 assists for 204 points. She also has 84 career draw controls that ranks her seventh all-time.

Byers and the Irish have won three games in a row and are in the midst of a five-game streak of games on the road. They are 8-3 overall and 2-1 in BIG EAST play.

Notre Dame returns to action this week when they travel to North Carolina to face the sixth-ranked Duke Blue Devils on Thursday, April 3. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
