Jennifer Newitt Named Assistant Women's Lacrosse Coach

Notre Dame, Ind. – University of Notre Dame women’s lacrosse coach Tracy Coyne announced today that Jennifer Newitt has been named assistant coach for the 2002-03 season. She joins Brooke Crawford, who was hired in July, to round out Coyne’s women’s lacrosse coaching staff.

Newitt joins the Irish after closing out a highly successful playing career at Dartmouth College. A 2002 IWLCA/Brine all-American selection, Newitt led the Big Green in scoring with 39 goals and 18 assists for 57 points. The team’s most valuable player on attack, the Radnor, Pa., native received the Patty Pierce Award awarded to the player who contributed the most on and off the field for four years.

Newitt finished her Dartmouth career with 59 goals and 27 assists for 86 career points. A two-time North Regional all-American (2001, 2002), Newitt was a unanimous first team all-Ivy League selection as a junior and a senior. The 2002 team captain, she helped lead the Big Green to three consecutive Ivy League titles from 1999-2001. During the 2002 season, Newitt was listed as an Ivy League player of the year candidate as well as a Teewarton national player of the year candidate.

In making the announcement, Coyne said, “I’m very pleased to have Jen joining our staff. She was a great player at Dartmouth and knows what it takes to play at the highest level. Being a Dartmouth graduate, she understands the demands on the student-athlete and can relate to our players.”

“Jen brings a great dimension to our staff because of the versatility she demonstrated as an athlete. She and Brooke (Crawford) compliment each other very well. They have a lot in common, but the difference in their coaching styles will benefit our program. I’m excited for the upcoming season.”

A member of the U.S. National Team’s Developmental Squad since 2000, Newitt graduated from Dartmouth with a Bachelor of Arts degree in geography. She has served as a coach at the Dartmouth Women’s Lacrosse Camps for four years and was an assistant coach for the Radnor High School field hockey team in the fall of 2000 and 2001.

At Radnor High School, Newitt won the Congressional Scholar-Athlete Award and was a two-time all-American in lacrosse. During he career at Radnor, she captained the women’s lacrosse, field hockey and basketball teams.

As a member of the U.S. National Team’s Developmental squad, Newitt joins fellow assistant Crawford, graduated defensive standout Kathryn Lam and senior midfielder Danielle Shearer as Notre Dame women’s lacrosse team members playing for the Developmental team.

Newitt joins the Notre Dame women’s lacrosse team that is coming off its best season in the sixth year history of the program. The 2002 Irish were 13-5 overall, finished second in the BIG EAST, advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals and finished the year ranked seventh in the nation.
