Janton named to 2022-23 U.S. National Junior Team

While he has yet to formally begin his career for the Fighting Irish, freshman Tommy Janton is already making waves in the swimming world this fall.

On Monday, the Kennett Square (Pa.) native was named to the USA Swimming U.S. National Junior Team roster in the 100 meter backstroke. His best time is 54.90, which was achieved while swimming for the Western YMCA Wahoos at 2022 NC AP LC YMCA Nationals. Three other young men were selected to the team in the event as well.

“We are very excited to welcome the infusion of up-and-coming talent into the National Junior Team Program,” said Erik Posegay, USA Swimming National Junior Team Program Director, per a press release. “The ‘22-’23 team features numerous medalists from our 2022 Mel Zajac and Junior Pan Pacific Championships teams, as well as some fresh faces ready to make an impact this coming year. It will be exciting to build off our first full year returning to international competition and using that experience to propel us forward to next summer. It was great to see 12 National Junior Team members from the ‘21-’22 squad move on to the National Team this year, and we hope to see that number continue to grow year after year.”

In total, the 72 athletes named to the squad represent 61 clubs and 26 states. To be eligible to earn the honor, the athlete must be 18 years old or younger as of Sept. 1, 2022 and be able to represent the United States in international competition as of that date. Between 26 and 40 men and women are selected, and they remain as a part of the team until Aug. 31, 2023.

The team’s goal is to better prepare athletes for the United States Olympic Swimming Team, thus strengthening the country’s abilities on the global stage. Alumni of the team include Olympic gold medalists Simone Manuel and Ryan Murphy.

Additionally, Janton stacked up a series of impressive accolades prior to arriving at Notre Dame. He qualified for the 2021 Olympic Trials in both the 100 and 200 backstroke, and he was the 2022 YMCA national champion in the events as well.
