Janicke Selected in the 2019 NHL Draft

Incoming freshman forward selected 132nd overall by Anaheim

VANCOUVER — Incoming freshman forward Trevor Janicke was selected in the fifth round (132nd overall) by the Anaheim Ducks on the second day of the 2019 NHL Draft this afternoon at Rogers Arena.

With the selection, Janicke becomes the 85th member of the Notre Dame hockey program to be taken in the NHL Draft.

Janicke, who earlier this week was named to the preliminary U.S. roster for the 2019 World Junior Summer Showcase, will join the Irish as a freshman in 2019-20. Last season he collected 48 points (22G, 26A) while captaining the Central Illinois Flying Aces (USHL). Janicke spent 2016-18 with USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program. The Maple Grove, Minnesota, native scored a pair of goals while helping Team USA earn the silver medal at the 2018 IIHF Under-18 Men’s World Championship.

The 2019-20 Notre Dame roster is now set to feature seven NHL Draft selections. Last year, forward Jake Pivonka and defenseman Spencer Stastney become the 83rd and 84th members of the Notre Dame hockey program to be selected. The New York Islanders selected Pivonka in the fourth round (103rd overall), while the Nashville Predators took Stastney in the fifth round (131st overall). Additionally, three current Notre Dame players have been drafted by the Colorado Avalanche. Senior Cam Morrison was selected by the Avalanche in the second round, 40th overall, of the 2016 NHL Draft. Sophomore defenseman Nate Clurman was chosen by Colorado in 2016, in the sixth round, 161st overall. Sophomore defenseman Nick Leivermann was also selected by Colorado in the seventh round of the 2017 NHL Draft, 187th overall. Finally, rising sophomore junior defenseman Matt Hellickson was taken 214th overall by the New Jersey Devils in 2017.

Notre Dame in the NHL Draft

  • Since the inaugural season of Irish hockey, 85 members of the Notre Dame hockey program have heard their names called at the National Hockey League Draft.
  • Since 2004, at least one current or former Irish player has been taken in the draft.
  • Additionally, 38 Irish players have now been selected since head coach Jeff Jackson took over the Irish program.

Notre Dame has also had three first round selections. Forward Riley Sheahan was a first round selection of the Detroit Red Wings in 2010 (21st overall). Before that, former defenseman Ian Cole (St. Louis, 18th overall in 2007) and former forward Kyle Palmieri (Anaheim, 26th in 2009) also were first round selections.
