Jacqueline Carter Claims Notre Dame's Lone Win On Day One Of Meyo Invitational

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The 19th annual Meyo Track and Field Invitational, hosted by the University of Notre Dame, got underway on Friday evening in the Loftus Sports Complex with the Notre Dame men’s and women’s track and field teams combining to post five top-three finishes on the evening. Day two of the meet will get underway on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. in the Loftus Sports Center.

Sophomore Jacqueline Carter posted a victory in the 1,000-meter run in a time of 2:51.70. Other top-three finishers on the night for the Fighting Irish included Stacey Cowan and Emily Loomis in the high jump, as they finished second and third, respectively, with a mark of 5-08.75. On the men’s side, Austin Wechter and Bob Kueny also had a 2-3 finish as they accomplished it in the 500-meter dash with respective times of 1:04.69 and 1:05.04.

FRIDAY RECAP:

Women Weight Throw: Louisville’s Emily Turland won with a throw of 59-01.25 (18.01m), while the top finisher for the Irish was Anna Weber, who placed 12th with a mark of 50-07.25 (15.42m).

Men Weight Throw: Missouri took the top-four spots with Chris Rohr claiming the victory with a throw of 65-05.00 (19.94m). Notre Dame’s Garet Koxlien placed 10th with a mark of 57-06.50 (17.54m).

Women’s Long Jump: Illinois’ Yvonne Mensah captured the win with a mark of 20-01.50 (6.13m) and Tameisha King from Nike was second with a distance of 19-10.25 (6.05m). Notre Dame’s Mary Saxer had a mark of 18-06.00 (5.64m) to place 16th overall.

Men’s Pole Vault: The Northern Iowa duo of Andre Poljanec and Jarno Kivioja went 1-2 with a mark of 17-00.75 (5.20m). Notre Dame’s Dave Viken was 20th with a vault of 14-07.25 (4.45m).

Women’s High Jump: Stacey Cowan and Emily Loomis finished second and third, respectively, for Notre Dame with marks of 5-08.75 (1.75m).

Women 5,000-Meter: Rebecca Walter and Alyson Kohlmeier made it a 1-2 finish for Michigan with respective times of 16:08.91 and 16:13.65. Notre Dame’s Ann Mazur placed 15th in a time of 17:22.99 and Jean Marinangeli, also from Notre Dame, was 17th in 17:29.91.

Men 5,000-Meter: Trent Hoerr from Illinois clocked in a winning time of 14:03.36. Notre Dame’s Tim Moore registered a fourth-place finish in a time of 14:05.17, while his teammate Patrick Smyth was sixth in 14:13.41. Kaleb Van Ort made it four Irish athletes in the top-10 with a time of 14:17.94 to place eighth.

Women’s Distance Medley Relay: Michigan’s quartet took the win in 11:06.10, while fellow Big Ten member Minnesota was second in 11:10.40. Notre Dame did not have a team in this race.

Men’s Distance Medley Relay: The four-man South Alabama team took the top spot in the two-team race with a time of 9:50.92 and Northern Iowa was second in 10:07.94.

Women’s 300-Meter Dash: Yvonne Mensah from Illinois clocked a winning time of 39.12 and she was followed closely by Michigan’s Chanelle Campbell in second with a time of 39.27. There were no Notre Dame athletes entered in the race.

Men’s 300-Meter Dash: Mississippi State alum Fernada Blakely, who was running for adidas, won in a time of 32.83, which is the fastest time in the United States so far this year. Jamel Ashley, also a Mississippi State alum, was second in 32.98. There were no Fighting Irish athletes in this event.

Women’s 1,000-Meter: Notre Dame’s Jacqueline Carter claimed the victory in 2:51.70 with her teammate Brianne Schmidt placing fourth in 2:53.70. The Fighting Irish captured two more spots in the top-10 with Julie Opet placing ninth in 2:59.07 and Katie DeRusso in tenth with a time of 2:59.81.

Men’s 1,000-Meter: Taking the win was Trevor Pye from Windsor in a time of 2:25.50 and Jim Pancoast from Michigan State was second in 2:25.60. Brett Adams was the top finisher for Notre Dame in a time of 2:29.54 to place 13th overall.

Women’s 500-Meter: Illinois’ Carlene Robinson placed first in 1:12.92 and Tara Colvin from UAB was second in 1:13.43. Notre Dame’s Nicole Yergler and Jennifer Leong placed 21st and 22nd, respectively, with times of 1:18.54 and 1:18.94.

Men’s 500-Meter: The Fighting Irish put three athletes in the top-10 as Austin Wechter was second in 1:04.69 and Bob Kueny was third in 1:05.04. Notre Dame’s Jordan Powell was eighth in 1:05.90. Michigan’s John D’Arcy took first overall in 1:03.88.

Saturday’s second and final day of competition at the Meyo Invitational is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. in the Loftus Sports Center.
