ITA Names Gleason and Sanders Midwest Award-Winners

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — Two Irish women’s tennis players are being recognized for outstanding play this week as the team makes their way down to Athens, Georgia for the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Championship. The Intercollegiate Tennis Association named senior Britney Sanders the Midwest Senior Player of the Year and sophomore Quinn Gleason the Midwest Player to Watch.

“I’m very excited for both Britney and Quinn,” says head coach Jay Louderback. “These awards are the result of the great years they had.”

At No. 1 singles, Sanders went 14-11 with victories over players from top programs such as Illinois, Virginia Tech and Northwestern. Gleason played just behind her in the line-up at No. 2, going 14-8, with her 6-4, 6-4 victory over then-fifth ranked Hayley Carter of UNC being a major highlight of the season. The duo also paired up at No. 1 doubles, where they went 16-8, taking down top-ranked teams such as Julia Elbaba and Rachel Person of Virginia and Beatrice Capra and Hanna Mar of Duke.

Sanders and Gleason will lead the Irish as they take on No. 2 Alabama at 9 a.m. on Thursday, May 15. Gleason is will also compete in the NCAA Singles Championship next week, and the duo will compete in the Doubles Championship together as well.
