NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The first weekend of fall competition has officially wrapped for the University of Notre Dame men’s tennis team, with underclassmen posting strong performances in tournaments in Napa Valley, California, and Cambridge, Massachusetts.

NAPA VALLEY CLASSIC

Freshman Tristan McCormick wrapped up a very impressive first collegiate weekend by reaching the semifinal round of the wild-card shootout at the Napa Valley Classic. After defeating USC’s Mateusz Smolicki 6-2, 6-2 to win his group, McCormick advanced to the shoot-out round for a chance at a USTA tournament entry. The Berwyn, Pennsylvania, product downed No. 49 Billy Griffith of California 10-5 in the quarterfinals before being edged by Texas A&M’s 93rd-ranked Valentin Vacherot 10-7 in the semifinal round.

Also winning Sunday was junior Alex Lebedev, who defeated Baylor’s Akos Kotorman 6-0, 4-6, 6-1 to move to 2-1 on the season.

CHOWDER FEST

Five Irish players picked up singles wins to wrap up play at Harvard’s Chowder Fest Sunday. Freshman William Howells earned his first collegiate win over a ranked opponent, defeating No. 115 Lamar Remy of Wisconsin in three sets in Flight 3. Sophomore Johnathan Small downed Harvard’s Lucas Koelle; senior Brendon Kempin defeated Wisconsin’s Robert Krill; junior Daniel Rayl ousted Buffalo’s Petr Vodak; and sophomore Conor Somers upended Harvard’s Samuel Beren.

Small went 3-0 in singles on the weekend, while Howells, Somers and freshman Richard Ciamarra were 2-1.

Joanne Norell, athletics communications assistant director at the University of Notre Dame, has been part of the Fighting Irish athletics communications team since 2014 and coordinates communications efforts for the Notre Dame men’s tennis, women’s tennis and fencing programs, in addition to overseeing production of the football Gameday Magazine. Norell is a 2011 graduate of Purdue University and earned her master’s degree from Georgetown University in 2013.
