Men’s Match Report | Women’s Match Report
NOTRE DAME, Ind. — The Notre Dame fencing team closed out the regular season Saturday afternoon at the Castellan Family Fencing Center with victories against Wayne State.
The men and women both fenced Wayne State twice on the day and after securing two wins each, both squads finished the shortened regular season with undefeated records. The women finished with a 16-0 mark while the men were 11-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED
In the first match for the men and women, they both had convincing wins over Wayne State. The women almost had a perfect mark with a 26-1 win while the men took victory by a score of 20-7. For the women, eight athletes posted 3-0 marks including the entire sabre squad (Neve Harrison, Simran Moolchandaney & Atara Greenbaum, the entire foil squad (Isabelle Elizondo, Jane Caulfield and Solene Watson), Dasha Yefremenko and Victoria Tontcheva. On the men’s side, the sabre squad went undefeated (George Bivins, Nat Landau and Ben Scholl) along with Valentin Matveev.
The second match against Wayne State was very similar to the first with both the men and women scoring big wins. The men picked up a 24-3 win over the Warriors while the women did not drop a point and won 27-0. For the men, the sabre squad went undefeated (Scholl, Landau and Sean Moon) as the Warriors did not travel their sabre team. Matveev went 3-0 again and was joined by Stephen Ewart, Joseph Marino and Philip Dority.
For the women in the second match, the sabre squad went undefeated as the Warriors did not have their sabre team at the meet. Elizondo, Caulfield, Watson, Yefremenko, and Tontcheva all repeated with 3-0 marks and were joined by Giorgia Giordano to round out the win.
UP NEXT
The regular season comes to a close for the Irish as they await the selections for the NCAA Championship. The team will learn on Thursday, March 18 who will be traveling to University Park for this year’s championship. NCAA’s will begin on March 25 with the men over the first two days and the women in the final two days.
