KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – In a talent-laden tournament field that included eight teams ranked in the top 40 nationally, the University of Notre Dame women’s golf team had its work cut out entering the weekend at the Mercedes-Benz Championship. The Fighting Irish capped a 10th place finish on Sunday with a final round score of 308 to card a three-round total of 911 (300-303-308) at the Cherokee Country Club (par 71/5,870 yards).

South Carolina erased a four-stroke overnight deficit with a three-under par 281, the only team sub-par round of the tournament, to win by 15 shots after firing a cumulative score of 865 (295-289-281). Tennessee earned runner-up honors at 879 (301-290-288), with Kent State checking in with a third place total of 880 (289-294-297).

Sophomore Jordan Ferreira was the top Notre Dame finisher in the tournament’s individual draw, spinning a final round four-over 75 to tie for 26th place at 225 (76-74-75). Ferreira rolled in birdies at the par 5 fifth and 11th holes during Sunday’s final round, closing the weekend a combined one-under on the Cherokee Country Club par 5 holes over the course of the tournament.

After a solid start to the championship over the first two rounds, junior Talia Campbell slid back to the pack with three double bogeys during a nine-over-par 80 in her third round. Campbell tied for 32nd place overall, one stroke behind Ferreira, with a 54-hole total of 226 (72-74-80).

Senior captain Ashley Armstrong vaulted 13 spots on the leaderboard Sunday, logging three birdies during a final round 74. Armstrong carded a three-day score of 228 (76-78-74) to claim a share of 41st place.

Freshman Kari Bellville tied for 57th place at 232 (76-77-79) as the fourth Notre Dame finisher on the final leaderboard, with senior Kelli Oride rounding out the team’s starting lineup in 80th place at 240 (77-82-81).

Notre Dame closes its 2014 fall schedule at the Landfall Tradition on Oct. 24-26 at the Country Club of Landfall in Wilmington, N.C. The Fighting Irish finished in fifth place at the 2012 Landfall Tradition after logging a team score of 296 that was shortened to an 18-hole event due to inclement weather.
