Minneapolis, Minn. – The #22 Notre Dame women’s swimming team is in third place with 437 points after day two of the Minnesota Invitational in Minneapolis, Minn. Minnesota is in first place with 586 points, followed by Wisconsin with 485.50 points.

Sophomore Kelly Hecking had a big day for Notre Dame as she won the 100-meter backstroke in a “B” qualifying time of 1:02.65. She also was a member of the 200 medley relay team, along with seniors Shannon Suddarth and Alison Newell and junior Carrie Nixon, which placed second in a time of 1:57.91. Minnesota won the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:56.23.

Nixon continued her strong meet as she placed second to Minnesota’s Terri Jashinsky in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:01.69. Nixon had the fastest time in the preliminaries as she swam the 100-yard race in a “B” qualifying time of 55.56, just missing the school record of 55.52 set by Elizabeth Barger in 1999. Nixon also won the 50 freestyle Friday night with a “B” qualifying time of 23.04.

The morning preliminary session are being swum in yards, while the evening session is being competed in meters as the 2000 NCAA Championships will be contested in meters.

The Irish had three swimmers finish in the top eight of the 100-meter breaststroke race as junior Kathleen Rimkus was fourth in a time of 1:12.78, Suddarth was fifth in 1:12.97 and sophomore Allison Lloyd was eighth in 1:15.04.

In the 3-meter diving competition, Notre Dame’s Heather Mattingly placed second with 490.15 points. Tennessee’s Lizzy Flint won the event with 495.60 points. The Irish’s Gina Ketelhohn finished eighth with 402.80.

The meet concludes Sunday afternoon with preliminaries scheduled for 10 a.m. and finals set for 3:30 p.m.
