NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Notre Dame track and field squads are in second (women) and fourth (men) place respectively after day one of the 1999 BIG EAST Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Villanova, Pa.

The Irish women, who currently trail first-place Pittsburgh 55-44, were led by Notre Dame’s lone event winner of the day, Alison Klemmer (Troy, Mich.), who won the 10,000 meters with a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 34:56.63. Two other Notre Dame women’s track and field members also got runner-up finishes. Distance runner JoAnna Deeter (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) placed second in the 3,000 meters behind Villanova’s Carrie Tollefson with a school record and NCAA automatic time of 9:18.31, while freshman Dore DeBartolo (Aurora, Ill.) finished second in the discus with a throw of 146-6. Others claiming all-BIG EAST status included sophomore Bethany Wilson (San Rafael, Calif.) in the pole vault (10-2) and Emily Bienko (Tranquillity, N.J.) in the heptathalon (4390 pts.), who both claimed third-place finishes.

On the men’s side, the Irish are in fourth place with 32 points and trail first place Connecticut, which has 54.50 points. Sophomore Ryan Shay (Central Lake, Mich.) captured the Notre Dame men’s highest finish of the day after placing second with a time of 30:06.55 in the 10,000 meters. Freshman Derek Dyer (Huntington, Ind.) placed fourth in the discus with a career-best throw of 164-6 after finishing fifth in the shot put with another career-best throw of 53-1. Joining Dyer with fifth-place finishes were freshman Luke Watson (Stillwater, Minn.) in the steeplechase (9:12.20) and sophomore Andrew Cooper (Granville, Ohio) in the high jump (6-7).

In addition to the seven men’s and eight women’s final events, a number of Irish track members did particularly well in their respective heats. Freshman Liz Grow (New Braunfels, Texas) won the 400-meter semifinals with a time of 53.97, while junior Chris Cochran (Crystal Lake, Ill.) ran a time of 21.83 in the 200-meter dash semifinals to place second.

The BIG EAST Championships conclude tomorrow with 29 events with the last, the men’s 4X400-meter relay, starting at 3:45 p.m. EDT.
