Irish Women's Tennis Shuts Down Pepperdine, 5-0

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Notre Dame women’s tennis team advanced to the finals of the ITA National Team Indoor regional qualifier Saturday after defeating Pepperdine, 5-0.

The Irish will face the winner of the Arkansas-Oregon match.

Notre Dame struck early, sweeping the doubles matches to go up 1-0.

The No.1-ranked duo of Kelcy Tefft and Kristy Frilling defeated Jillian Braverman and Anne-Christine Viocu, 8-2. Cosmina Ciobanu and Kali Krisik downed Alex Liles and Anamika Bhargava, 8-1 to clinch the doubles point. Shannon Mathews and Colleen Rielley defeated Alex Walters and Zlatka Petrova, 8-2, to complete the sweep.

No. 39 Frilling downed Walters, 6-0, 6-1, to move the Irish ahead, 2-0. Ciobanu knocked off Liles, 6-1, 6-2, and No. 62 Kristen Rafael defeated Braverman, 6-1, 6-4, to seal the win for Notre Dame. No. 46 Krisik downed Viocu, 6-3, 6-4 to wrap up the match. Bhargava was leading No. 45 Tefft, 1-6, 6-3, 2-1, before the match was called. Andrea Oates was leading Mathews, 3-6, 6-2, 2-1.

The winner of Sunday’s final match will advance, along with 14 other regional qualifiers, to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships Feb. 13-16 in Madison, Wisc.
