Irish Women's Tennis Ready for ITA National Team Indoor Championship

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The 14th-ranked Notre Dame women’s tennis team heads to the Nielsen Tennis Courts in Madison, Wisc., this weekend for the ITA National Team Indoor Championship.

The Irish will face fifth-ranked Stanford in their first-round match Friday at 9 a.m.

Notre Dame defeatd Pepperdine, 5-0, then knocked off Arkansas, 4-1, to clinch a berth to the national tournament.

In addition to the Irish, this year’s 16-team field includes: Baylor, California, Clemson, Duke, Florida, Fresno State, Georgia, defending champion Georgia Tech, Miami, North Carolina, Northwestern, Southern California, Stanford, UCLA and host Wisconsin.

Notre Dame is currently 4-0 in 2009, having knocked off four ranked teams so far this season. The Irish are riding a 15-5 singles record, as well as a 9-2 doubles mark. Notre Dame has four ranked singles players with freshman Kristy Frilling leading the way at 39. Senior Kelcy Tefft is 45th, followed by junior Kali Krisik at 46th and sophomore Kristen Rafael at 62.

Tefft and Frilling are the nation’s top doubles team. Tefft is also ranked fourth with Krisik, while juniors Cosmina Ciobanu and Colleen Rielley are ranked 50th.

Notre Dame went 1-2 at last year’s National Indoor, but was the 2007 runner-up.
