Irish Women's Tennis Advances to ITA National Team indoor Semifinals

MADISON, Wisc. – The No. 14 Notre Dame women’s tennis team knocked off No. 4 Baylor on its way to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship semifinals Saturday.

The Irish took an early 1-0 lead after clinching the doubles point. No. 1 Kelcy Tefft and Kristy Frilling fell to Lenka Broosova and Csilla Borsanyi, 8-0. Shannon Mathews and Colleen Rielley defeated Nina Secerbegovic and Kasia Siwosz, 8-4, before Cosmina Ciobanu and Kali Krisik downed Taylor Ormond and Jelena Stanivuk, 9-8, to win the doubles point for the Irish.

Mathews moved the Irish ahead, 2-0, with an early 6-0, 6-1 singles victory over Karolina Filipiak. Baylor got on the board, as Stanivuk defeated No. 62 Kristen Rafael, 6-2, 6-0. Broosova knocked off No. 39 Frilling, 6-3, 6-3, to even the score at 2-2.

No. 45 Tefft put the Irish up 3-2 with a 6-1, 6-4 defeat of Ormond. Baylor tied the match when Borsanyi downed No. 46 Kali Krisik, 6-2, 6-3. Ciobanu, then, defeated Secerbergovic, 6-4, 6-3, to clinch the win for the Irish.

Notre Dame moves to 6-0 on the season and advances to the semifinals of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships.

The Irish will take on No. 1 Northwestern Sunday at 3:30 p.m. (CST).
