NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Seniors Lauren Buck (Flint, Mich.) and Christine Trezza (Staten Island, N.Y.) have been named women’s rowing team captains for the 2008-09 campaign. Since the 2006-07 rowing season, the two have been rowing together on the varsity eight boat for the Irish, while also rowing on the same novice boat during their freshman season in 2005-06.

“Lauren and Christine have distinguished themselves throughout their career and it is a tribute to their leadership abilities and the respect that they have from their teammates that they have been selected captains for this season,” said Irish head coach Martin Stone. “In fact, we have an outstanding group of seniors on this year’s team who want to leave a lasting legacy in our program. Lauren, Christine and all of our season’s will do a great job of leading our team this year.”

The ’07-08 season saw the Irish continue to rewrite the record books as the team became the first in BIG EAST history to sweep all six races at the championships on their way to earning their fifth consecutive title, the second-longest active streak in the nation. The Irish finished the season ranked 18th in the nation, which marked the third straight year that the team saw itself ranked at season’s end.

In the ’06-07 season, the Irish returned to the NCAAs for the second consecutive season. The team was able to earn a 12th-place finish at the championships and earn a final team ranking of sixth in the last Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA)/USRowing rankings after reaching a program-best third in the poll earlier in the season. The varsity eight boat, along with capturing the BIG EAST Championship gold medal that season, achieved another program first when they defeated five consecutive top-10 boats over the course of four races (No. 5 California, No. 7 Stanford, No. 9 UCLA, No. 5 Virginia and No. 7 Princeton).

Buck, a three-year member of the varsity eight boat and two-time monogram winner, has been a standout student along with being a key member of the team. She has garnered recognition as a member of the BIG EAST Academic All-Star Team each of the past two seasons (2007 and 2008) as well as being awarded the CRCA National Scholar-Athlete Award in those years. During her freshman season, Buck rowed as a member of the novice eight crew. The boat enjoyed tremendous success over the course of the season, racing to three second-place finishes in the opening regatta against Minnesota and Tennessee and finishing the season with a second-place finish at the BIG EAST Championships.

Trezza, also a three-year member of the varsity eight boat and three-time monogram winner, has not only excelled in the boat but in the classroom as well. She has been selected as a member of the BIG EAST Academic All-Star Team each of her first three years (2006-08) for her scholastic accomplishments. The CRCA also awarded her with the National Scholar-Athlete Award during her sophomore and junior campaigns. Prior to moving to the varsity eight boat, Trezza rowed as a member of the novice eight crew in her freshman year, helping the boat capture first in the novice eight “A” race at the Lubbers Cup. That year, she also rowed with several different varsity four crews, including the boat which competed at the NCAA Championships and finished 11th place overall.
