Irish Women's Golfers To Take Part In The Windy City Collegiate

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Irish women’s golf season continues early next week when the team travels to Glenview, Il. To take part in Northwestern’s Windy City Collegiate Classic. Play opens on Monday, Oct. 5 with two rounds at the Glen Course, followed by the final round of play on Tuesday, Oct. 6. The Glen Course is a Par 72, 6,539 yards in length. Play gets underway at 8:30 a.m. on Monday morning with a shotgun start.

The five players comprising the Irish lineup will be seniors Annie Brophy (Spokane, Wash./Gonzaga Prep) and Kristin Wetzel (Middletown, N.Y./Hilton Head Prep), juniors So-Hyun Park (Seoul, South Korea/Bradenton Prep) and Katie Conway (Wading River, N.Y.) as well as sophomore Becca Huffer (Denver, Colo./Littleton).

The 2009 Windy City Collegiate will showcase a strong field of 15 teams, including three top-25 teams (according to golfstat’s 9.30.09 rankings) in No. 1 Purdue, No. 11 New Mexico and No. 17 Arizona.

THE COMPETITION: 15 teams will comprise the Windy City Collegiate tournament field, including (Golfstat rankings from 9.30.09 in parentheses): Arizona (17), East Carolina (66), Illinois (55), Iowa State (137), Michigan (62), New Mexico (11), Northwestern (40), Notre Dame (70), Oklahoma (69), Purdue (1), TCU (27), Tulane (31), UNC Greensboro (72), UNC Wilmington (87), UNLV (34).

THE WINDY CITY COLLEGIATE: Notre Dame will be appearing in the Windy City Collegiate for the first time, though the Irish did finish fifth in the Northwestern Invitational during the 1996-97 campaign. Katie King paced the Irish with a 237, tying her for seventh place.

FORMAT: Each team’s lineup will be comprised of five golfers with the lowest four scores for each round counting towards the overall team score. The tournament will consist of 54 holes featuring two 18-hole rounds on Tuesday, followed by the concluding 18 holes on Tuesday. All three rounds will begin at 8:30 a.m. with shotgun starts.

THE LAST TIME OUT: The Irish women’s golf team finished tied for third at the Bettie Lou Evans Invitational, which was shortened to 36-holes after the second round was cancelled due to rain. The Irish combined to shoot a 294 on the final day, putting them at 26-over par (598) for the tournament. So-Hyun Park led the Irish with a one-over par 72 on the final day of play, earning a share of eighth place.

Notre Dame tied Chattanooga for third, while Florida State (+15/587) finished first followed by UCF (+20/592) in second. Paula Hurtado of Florida International and Macarena Silva of Florida State tied atop the individual leaderboard, as both players turned in even-par 143’s.

Becca Huffer and Annie Brophy tied for 14th with plus-six 149 totals. Huffer carded a two-over par 73 in the final round, while Brophy turned in a plus-four 75. Huffer has now finished tied for 14th in both of Notre Dame’s tournaments this season.

NEXT UP: Notre Dame travels to Knoxville, Tenn. for the Mercedes Benz Collegiate Championship, hosted by the University of Tennessee. The three-day tournament will be played on October 16-18 at the Fox Den Country Club.
