Irish Women's Golf In Second Place At The Lady Northern Invitational

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – After two rounds of play at the Lady Northern Invitational, the Irish are in second place, shooting a plus-26 on the first day of play. Junior Annie Brophy (Spoakne, Wash./Gonzaga Prep) led Notre Dame by firing a plus-one 145. Brophy shot a plus-three 75 in the morning round and followed up with a minus-two 70 in the afternoon. Her second round included four birdies at the par-72, 6,276 yard Kampen course. Brophy’s 70 marked the lowest round of her Irish career.

The Irish took the lead after one round of play, shooting an 11-over 299, three strokes in front of second place Michigan State (302). So-Hyun Park (Seoul, South Korea/Bradenton Prep) shot a plus-two 74 in the first round to lead the Irish, including birdies on 10, 17 and 18.

Also scoring for Notre Dame in the morning round was sophomore Katie Conway (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River), Brophy and senior Lisa Maunu (St. Thomas, Ontario/Parkside Collegiate Institute). Each Irish golfer shot a plus-three 75, putting them in a tie for seventh on the individual leaderboard.

Freshman Becca Huffer (Denver, Colo./Littleton HS) shot a plus-five 77 in the day’s first round. Junior Kristin Wetzel (Middletown, N.Y./Hilton Head Prep), playing under Independent status, shot a plus-nine 81 to round out the Irish scores from round one.

In addition to Brophy’s 70, Park, Huffer and Conway also scored for the Irish in the afternoon. Park did so by shooting a plus-six 78 while Huffer took two-strokes off of her first round score to card a plus-three 75. Conway registered a plus-eight 80. Maunu and Wetzel each had plus-nine 81’s in their final rounds of day one.

The Lady Northern will conclude with the final 18-hole round of play beginning at 9:00 a.m. The Irish are nine shots off the lead held by host Purdue, while Brophy is two shots behind leader Junthima Gulyanamitta (143/-1) of Purdue.
