Irish Women's Golf In Eighth At Bryan National Collegiate

April 3, 2009

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Under windy conditions on the Champions Course of the Bryan Park Golf and Enrichment Center, the Irish women’s golf team shot a 309 (21 over-par) in the first round of the 2009 Bryan National Collegiate. Notre Dame sits in eighth-place in the 18-team field. Freshman Becca Huffer (Denver, Colo./Littleton HS) fired a three-over par 75 to lead the Irish, tying for seventh-place through one round of play.

Huffer’s first round included birdies on the seventh and 15th as well as a team-high 11 pars. She is joined in seventh-place by 10 other golfers. The group trails leader Tessa Teachman of LSU by seven shots. Teachman, the only player in the 96-player field to score under-par, turned in a minus-four 68.

Senior captain Lisa Maunu (St. Thomas, Ontario/Parkside Collegiate Institute), junior Annie Brophy (Spokane, Wash./Gonzaga Prep) and sophomore So-Hyun Park (Seoul, South Korea/Bradenton Prep) each carded six-over par marks of 78 to score for the Irish. The trio is tied for 37th. Maunu notched a birdie on the third and added 10 pars. Brophy recorded birdies on the third and sixth, both of which are par-fives, to give Brophy a minus two mark on the course’s four par-fives, which tied for the best mark of the day with three other golfers. Park birdied the 11th and 18th, while adding eight pars.

Sophomore Katie Conway (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) posted a plus-nine 81 that included 10 pars.

As a team, Notre Dame trails leader LSU by 19 strokes. The Tigers, led by Teachman, turned in a two-over par 290 in the first round. But the Irish trail second place Virginia and Wake Forest by just five strokes.
