Irish Women Finish Ninth at Pre-National Meet

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. –

The 30th-ranked Notre Dame women’s cross country team finished ninth, while the men finished 15th at the Pre-National Meet Saturday in Terre Haute, Ind.

Senior Lindsey Ferguson was the first Irish runner to cross the line, finishing 14th with a time of 21:00.9. Junior Marissa Treece finished 65th in 21:45.5, while junior Erica Watson was 73rd with a time of 21:50.3. Sophomore Rachel Velarde clocked in at 21:50.4 to finish 74th, freshman Rebecca Tracy was 97th in 22:05.7, senior Beth Tacl finished 121st with a time of 22:23.5 and sophomore Abby Higgins crossed the line in 23:11.3 to finish 188th.

Top-ranked Washington won the team crown with 59 total points, followed by Florida in second with 89 and Princeton in third with 126 points. Notre Dame was ninth with 323 total points.

Illinois’ Angela Bizzarri won the women’s title with a time of 20:27.8.

The Irish men finished 15th with 442 points.

Senior Jake Walker clocked in at 24:34.7 to finish 51st, while junior Dan Jackson was 66th in 24:41.2. Sophomore Joe Miller finished 100th with a time of 25:07.1, junior Ryan Jacobs was 112th in 25:14.3 and sophomore Jonathan Shawel was 113th with a time of 25:14.7. Junior Paul Springer finished 182nd with a time of 26:05.4, and sophomore Jordan Carlson was 187th in 26:09.6.

Stanford earned top team honors with 47 points. Colorado was second with 130 points, followed by BYU in third with 163. Stanford’s Chris Derrick won the individual men’s crown with a time of 23:27.1

The Irish will take the next two weeks off in preparation for the BIG EAST Championships held Oct. 31 in Kenosha, Wis.
