Irish Women Claim Notre Dame Invitational Title; Men Take Second

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame women’s track and field team won the Notre Dame Invitational while the men took second Saturday afternoon at Loftus Sports Center.

The women’s team totaled 193 points, topping Michigan State by 36 points. The men’s team clinched a second-place finish (175 points), missing out on first place outright by just seven points. They held off third-place South Florida by 74 points. Both squads defeated BIG EAST foe DePaul by 91 or more points during the four-team meet.

The Irish won 13 of the 32 events, with the women claiming seven victories and the men six. Sophomore Chris Giesting led the charge as he tore away with three event victories with top-finishes in the 200m, 500m and the 4x400m relay. Jade Barber (60-meter hurdles, 4x400m relay) and Michelle Brown (400m dash, 4x400m relay) each achieved two event victories.

The Irish travel next weekend (Jan. 25-26) to Bloomington, Ind., to participate in the Indiana Relays.

WOMEN’S EVENTS

60m Hurdles: Jade Barber (8.37-first) just edged out her sister Kaila Barber (8.37-second) by two-thousands of a second to take the top spot. Meghan Moore placed third (8.82) followed close behind by Carly Loeffel who finished fifth (8.97).

1,000m: Kelly Curran was a mere two seconds behind the top-finisher as she placed second with a 2:51.14. Angela Ryck gave chase with a third-place finish passing through the line at 2.54.43. McKinzie Schulz (2:55.43-fifth) and Karen Lesiewicz (3:03.61-eighth) cracked the top-eight spots.

60m: Kaila Barber placed second crossing the line at 7.61m. Aijah Urssery split the field of 15 competitors with a seventh-place finish (7.80).

400m: Michelle Brown was the top-finisher crossing the finish line at 54.59. Margaret Bamgbose placed second (54.70) and Ann Marie Kelly finished eighth (57.66) to take the top positions for Notre Dame.

Mile: Alexa Aragon stopped the clock at 4:56.04, good for a second-place finish. Meg Ryan (5:03.96-sixth) and Emily Frydrych (5:08.01) rounded out the top eight spots for the Irish.

500m: Megan Yanik led the attack for the Irish placing third (1:13.54) finishing just three-tenths of a second off the leader. Jaclyn Winkel (1:16.12-fourth) and Mikaila Chamblee (1:17.49-fifth) each remained in the top tier of the 10 total participants.

800m: Danielle Aragon was just 1.5 seconds away from breaking the school record as she won the event with a time of 2:09.73. Kelly Curran (2:14.30-sixth), Angela Ryck (2:14.50-seventh) and Sydni Meunier (2:14.63) each cracked the top eight..

200m: Jade Barber captured a second-place finish with a time of 24.77.

3,000m: Rebecca Tracy won the event with a time of 9:40.27. Jessica Rydberg (10:00.48-fourth) and Gabby Gonzales (10:09.38-seventh) rounded out the top eight spots.

4x400m Relay: Notre Dame held off Michigan State by a mere second to gather in the victory. The Irish ran a winning time of 3:41.69 lead by Jade Barber. Michelle Brown ran the second leg followed by Megan Yanik who ran the third. Bamgbose assumed her anchor duties to bring home the win.

High Jump: All four Irish participants leapt 1.63m. Fiona Paladino led the Irish with a second-place finish. Meghan Moore and Kendra Jennings each tied for fourth while Carly Loeffel finished eighth.

Pole Vault: Ann Polcari vaulted to a second-place finish with a height of 3.70m. Kelly Burke (third) and Kayla Polcari (fourth) each cleared the bar at 3.70m for their best effort. Kathryn Barousse placed sixth followed by Chrissy Finkel (seventh) as the pair each leapt over a 3.40 mark.

Long Jump: Kaila Barber was the only participate to extend past the six meter mark after posting a winning leap of 6.12m. Carly Loeffel secured a fifth-place finish with a 5.60m. Jessie Christian (5.57m-sixth) and Meghan Moore (5.54m-eighth) each made it into the top eight for the Irish.

Triple Jump: Mary Esther Gourdin secured a first-place finish with a winning time of 12.10m. Jessie Christian (11.67-second), Kelly Burke (11.27m-fourth) and Lauren Leniart (10.80-fifth) each cracked the top five.

Weight Throw: Michigan State’s Beth Rohl set a new Meyo Track record and qualified for the NCAA Championships with a 21.27m throw. The record was previously held by Miami’s Kimberli Barrett who threw for 20.97m in 2005. Vivien Devaney was the top Irish finisher in the event and led a wave of Notre Dame competitors throwing the weight 17.28m. Ihuoma Nwaogwugwu (16.51-fifth), Emily Morris (15.73-sixth), Madeline Casanova (15.60m-seventh) and Lena Madison (15.10m-eighth) all cracked the top eight in a pool of 13 participants.

Shot Put: Emily Morris’ throw of 14.29m was good enough for a second-place finish. Emily Kujawski finished seventh with a throw of 12.21m.

MEN’S EVENTS

60m Hurdles: Jarrod Buchanon was the first to cross the finish line recording a winning time of 8.14m. Bryce Wood captured a third-place finish with a time of 8.32m. Brent Swanberg (8.99) finished seventh followed by Dean Odegard (9.53) who placed eighth.

1,000m: Steve Blazer battled towards a fourth-place finish (2:28.75) chasing just three seconds behind the leader. Kevin Byrne followed close behind, placing fifth with a 2:28.84. Robert Devine placed seventh with a time of 2:33.98.

60m: Patrick Feeney nabbed a third-place finish in 6.98.

400m: Patrick Feeney was the top-finisher in the 400m dash with a winning time of 46.96. Brendan Dougherty picked up a fourth-place finish with a 48.49 mark.

Mile: A wave of blue and gold sought the front of the pack as Notre Dame captured five of the top seven spots. Michael Clevenger won the event with a winning time of 4:13.65. DJ Thornton left no gap in between as he cruised toward a second-place finish (4:14.13). Walter Schafer (4:18.78-fourth), Jeff MacMillian (4:19.76-sixth) and Jason Hoard (4:21.29-sixth) each filled out the top of the field for the Irish.

500m: Notre Dame’s current event record holder Chris Giesting outlasted the competition capturing a first-place finish with a 1:03.17. Aaron Dunn placed third with a time of 1:06.53.

3,000m: Jake Kildoo finished second with a time of 8:21.80. Martin Grady placed third (8:26.31) followed by Patrick Lesiewicz who finished sixth (8:42.61).

800m: Eric Bebeke set the pace for the Irish crossing the line at 1:54.00 to finish fifth. Eddy Gibbons (1:54.70-sixth), Jack Favorite (1:55.16-seventh) and Mike Bradley (1:55.94-eighth) rounded out the competition for Notre Dame.

200m: Chris Giesting won the event crossing the finish line at 21.69.

4x400m Relay: Notre Dame won the event posting a winning time of 3:12.68. Brendan Dougherty ran the first lap followed by Chris Giesting and Jarrod Buchanon. Patrick Feeney ran in the anchor position to seal the victory for the Irish.

Pole Vault: Patrick Krach (sixth), Dean Odegard (seventh) and David Schipper (eighth) all attainted a top height of 4.50m.

High Jump: Brent Swanberg, Ted Glasnow and Dean Odegard each record a 1.86m leap for their best mark. Swanberg and Glasnow tied for fourth as Odegard posted a sixth-place finish.

Long Jump: Keith Mesidor posted the farthest distance in the sand for Notre Dame after finishing second with a 7.15m effort. Logan Renwick placed second, nearly breaking the seven meter mark with his leap of 6.95m. Ted Glasnow (6.75m-fifth) and Brent Swanberg (6.48m-sixth) rounded out the top six overall positions for the Irish.

Triple Jump: Logan Renwick was the top performer for the Irish gathering a third-place finish with a 14.31m leap. Keith Mesidor left his mark in the sand at 12.48m to place fourth.

Weight Throw: Anthony Thomas’ throw of 18.23m landed him a fifth-place finish. Jordan Stumph (17.54m-sixth) and Dominick Padovano (14.95m-eighth) also placed in the top eight.

Shot Put: Anthony Thomas placed eighth throwing 14.19m on his best attempt.
