Irish Win One Individual Title on Day Two of NCAA Championships

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – On the second day of the 2022 NCAA Fencing Championships, the Irish took home one National Championship title on their home strips at Purcell Pavilion in the Joyce Center.

The Irish had three of six fencers make it to the semifinals and all three advanced to the finals. Notre Dame took home one title in women’s epee, and runner-up in both sabre and foil.

Notre Dame finished the day on top of the team standings with a total of 102 points. They hold a twelve point lead over second place Princeton. The next closest team is Columbia with 83 points in third place.

Women’s Epee

Hsieh dominated her way through the day to get herself a spot in the finals. She took on Emily Vermeule from Harvard in the finals. Hsieh took down Emily Vermuele to win the National Championship in women’s epee. She won 15-10. Hsieh finished 21-2 overall throughout the championship.

Amanda Pirkowski finished her first NCAA Championship appearance strong with three straight wins in the fourth round. She finished the day in eighth place going 13-10 overall.

Women’s Foil

Amita Berthier had a tight match in the semifinals but ultimately took down her Ohio State opponent, Camilla Rivano. Berthier eventually won 15-11. Berthier went on to fence in the finals against Maia Weintraub of Princeton. Berthier ultimately fell to Weintraub in the finals, 9-15.

Nicole Pustilnik finished her first NCAA Championship appearance in sixth place. She takes home a 17-6 overall record. Pustilnik started off strong with three straight wins and then finished her day again with seven wins.

Women’s Sabre

Atara Greenbaum jumped out to a 5-4 lead in her finals match up against Elizabeth Tartakovsky of Harvard. After trading points the entire bout, Greenbaum fell to Tartakovsky 10-15. Greenbaum finished 18-23 overall.

Kara Linder finished in fifth place with an overall record of 16-7. Her stretch of wins came midway through the day when she put together four straight wins, three times.

Up Next

The men will take the strip to continue the 2022 National Championships on Saturday morning. Round robin play will begin with the first three rounds throughout the day in epee, foil and sabre. Epee gets rolling at 9 a.m. ET, followed by foil at 11 am and sabre starting at 1:30 p.m.
