Irish Win 11 Events In Strong Showing At ND Invitational

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — The University of Notre Dame track & field program hosted the Notre Dame Invitational on Saturday, hosting Louisville, Illinois State, Loyola and Marquette at Loftus Sports Center. The Irish men won the meet with 141 points while the women’s side finished second to Louisville with 117.5 points.

The Irish totaled 11 first place finishes on the day, five coming from the men’s team and six on the women’s squad.

Notre Dame once again dominated the distance events, winning the 800, 1000, mile and 3000 races on both the men’s and women’s sides.

The most impressive performance of the day came in the men’s 3000, as the Irish placed the top five finishers in the race with Peter Monahan winning the event with a time of 8:09.41.

Clayton Goldman (1:54.25) won the 800 for the Irish while Samuel Voelz (2:24.05) crossed the line first in the 1000. Notre Dame’s Andrew Alexander took the top spot in the mile with a mark of 4:07.99.

On the women’s side Laura DeVito won the 800, crossing the line in 2:16.04. Notre Dame’s Mikayla Schneider won the 1000 with a time of 2:48.94 while Erin Sullivan (4:53.80) took the top spot in the mile. Rachel DaDamio capped off the afternoon with a first-place finish in the 3000, winning with a mark of 9:40.02.

For the second straight week the Irish received strong performances from the women’s hurdlers, as Summer Thorpe won the final in 8.34 with teammate Naya Sharp placing second in 8.54.

The other event Notre Dame managed to come away with wins on the men’s and women’s sides was the weight throw. Abbey Kapitan won for the women with a throw of 20.52m. Logan Kuskey recorded the longest mark on the men’s side, throwing 20.66m to win the event.

The Irish will be back in action on Friday, Jan. 31, as they travel to Ann Arbor, Michigan, to compete in the Power 5 Invitational.
