Irish Welcome In Michigan And Northwestern To Rolfs

Jan. 11, 2013

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Fresh off a holiday break and a training trip to Miami, the University of Notre Dame women’s swimming and diving team returns to action this Saturday, Jan. 12 at 1 p.m. as it welcomes Michigan and Northwestern to Rolfs Aquatic Center.

The meet gets underway at 1 p.m. with the 200 medley relay and marks the first home meet since Nov. 10 when the Irish played host to BIG EAST foe Louisville.

Notre Dame (1-3) last competed at the beginning of December at the elite Hawkeye and Ohio State Invitationals. The diving squad went to Iowa and finished eighth out of 10 teams despite not competing in any swimming events, while in Ohio the Irish took fifth out of nine ranked teams despite not competing in the diving events.

Several student-athletes turned in strong performances in Ohio including sophomore Emma Reaney, who played a role in five school records, notched four NCAA A cuts and one NCAA B cut and won three individual events. For her efforts she was named BIG EAST Women’s Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week for the second time this season and for the fifth time of her short career.

Senior Kim Holden also had a strong meet as she set a new school standard in the 100 breast and swam a leg on the school record 400 medley relay team that automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships. Other members of the relay team included Reaney, junior Kelly Ryan and freshman Catherine Galletti.

In Iowa senior Jenny Chiang won the 1-meter and 3-meter dives, while sophomore Allison Casareto placed second in the 1-meter event.

Michigan (1-3) is coming off wins at the Hawkeye Invitational and the Orange Bowl Classic, while Northwestern (2-2) finished second at the TYR Invitational and fourth at the Iowa Invitational.

Fans can follow the meet in multiple ways. For those that are unable to make it to Rolfs, where the admission is free, they can follow online through the live stats link at UND.com or download one of two apps that work on an iPhone or iPad. The free app (Meet Mobile) and a paid app (Big Fish) can both be accessed at Rolfs or on the road.
