Irish Varsity Four Moves Into Petite Final At 2012 NCAA Championships

WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – The University of Notre Dame rowing team saw its varsity four boat advance into the Petite Finals at the 2012 NCAA Championships after a fifth-place finish in semifinal action Saturday on Mercer Lake. Both the varsity eight and second varsity eight are set for Third Final action.

The Irish four boat of coxswain Danni Schneider, Joanna Poinsatte, Kelsey Sekanick, Katie Suyo and Stella Willoughby entered the first of two semifinal heats in the first lane, racing against the likes of California, Yale, Washington, Harvard and Michigan. Notre Dame crossed in fifth place in the heat at 7:21.20 to earn a spot in the Petite Finals.

The Irish boating is scheduled to take to the water in the final at 10:05 a.m. (ET) Sunday against Cornell, Harvard, UCLA, Wisconsin and Michigan. They will look to match the previous best finish by a Notre Dame boat at the NCAA Championships set by the ’06 varsity eight boat, which won the Petite Final for a seventh-place overall finish.

Following the varsity four Petite Final, Notre Dame’s second varsity eight boat of coxswain Christina Dines, Ingrid Woelfel, Rose Doerfler, Anna Kottkamp, Paige Aiello, Kelsey Haddad, Teresa Blumenstein and Teresa Rubinger hits the water in the Third Final against Michigan State, Cornell and Harvard at 10:40 a.m.

The Irish conclude their 2012 NCAA Championships in the Third Final of the varsity eight when the boating of coxswain Abby Meyers, Courtney Gaberino, Morgan Kelley, Stephanie O’Neill, Olivia Kacsits, Ailish Sheehan, Erin Boxberger and Molly Bruggeman race against Brown, Michigan State and Wisconsin at 11:30 a.m.
