Irish Varsity Eight Claims First ACC Crew Of The Week Citation

April 29, 2014

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Following a strong performance in a repeat team victory at last weekend’s Dale England Cup, the University of Notre Dame women’s rowing team’s first varsity eight has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Rowing Crew of the Week, the conference office announced on Tuesday. It was the first weekly honor earned by the Irish since joining the conference prior to this season.

The Irish lineup of coxswain Christina Dines, Teresa Rubinger, Hilary Shinnick, Anna Kottkamp, Ailish Sheehan, Erin Boxberger, Molly Bruggeman, Courtney Gaberino and Joanna Mulvey won all three races last weekend on Lake Lemon in Bloomington, Ind. The Irish eight logged the fastest time in the ACC this season with a 6:17.90 winning effort over No. 13 Indiana on Friday to open the Dale England Cup, despite rough waters that were caused by a strong tail wind earlier in the day.

Notre Dame added an open water win over Alabama on Saturday morning, as a winning time of 6:26.60 outlasted the Crimson Tide by more than 30 seconds (6:58.10). The Irish closed Saturday’s races with a time of 6:20.00, adding a second straight open water triumph over Rhode Island (6:39.80) to cap an undefeated weekend.

Notre Dame, currently ranked 10th in the most recent Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA)/USRowing Coaches Poll, will make its first appearance in the ACC Rowing Championship on May 16-17 on Lake Hartwell in Clemson, S.C. Preliminary heats will be held on May 16, with both petite and grand final races to follow on May 17.
