NOTRE DAME, Ind. – No. 4/5 Notre Dame (2-0) outscored Michigan (4-1) 9-1 in an impressive second half display in the home opener at Arlotta Stadium on Sunday afternoon to defeat the Wolverines by a final score of 16-5. The Irish never trailed in the winning effort.
Junior attackman Mikey Wynne led Notre Dame in goals with three, picking up his second hat trick in as many games this season. Four other players recorded two goals for the Irish as sophomore attackman Ryder Garnsey, sophomore attackman Brendan Gleason, junior midfielder Pierre Byrne and sophomore midfielder Timmy Phillips each scored twice.
How It Happened
The Irish wasted no time in building an early lead against the Wolverines, as Wynne scored the first two goals of the game in the opening five minutes. Garnsey followed with an unassisted goal with eight minutes remaining in the first quarter to push the Notre Dame advantage to 3-0. Michigan then clawed its way back into the game by scoring the next two goals and cut the Irish lead to one at 3-2.
Notre Dame responded with goals from Byrne and sophomore midfielder Drew Schantz in the final two minutes of the first to take a 5-2 lead into the second quarter. The two sides played an even second stanza with both teams finding the back of the net twice to push the score to 7-4 at the half.
Michigan came out of the intermission and trimmed the Irish lead to two in the first two minutes at 7-5. However, that was as close as Notre Dame allowed the visitors to get, as the Irish defense put the clamps on the Wolverine attack for the remainder of the game, not allowing another goal. Notre Dame ended the game by scoring nine unanswered goals to win going away by a final score of 16-5.

Garnsey led the Irish in points for the second time in as many outings, posting two goals and two assists for four points. The sophomore standout now has 12 points on the season consisting of eight goals and four assists.
Stat Of The Game
Notre Dame did not allow a goal in the final 28:50 of Sunday’s game. The Irish defense locked down on the Wolverine attack in the second half, making life difficult for the Michigan offense. A major factor was Notre Dame’s ability to defend without recording penalties, as the Irish did not record a single penalty in the game.
Notre Dame Notes
- With the win the Irish are now 2-0 in the all-time series when meeting as two varsity programs.
- Notre Dame improves to 26-3 in home openers under Baumer Family Head Men’s Lacrosse Coach Kevin Corrigan and 33-4 in program history.
- The Irish improve to 31-5 in games played in the month of February during Corrigan’s tenure.
- Notre Dame did not record a single penalty against the Wolverines.
- The Irish outshot Michigan 54-21, recording doubel-digit shots in all four quarters.
- Notre Dame won the turnover battle, recording just nine compared to Michigan’s 18.
- With his three goals, Wynne recorded the 17th hat trick of his career and second of the season.
- Freshman midfielder Bryan Costabile scored his third goal of the season and has found the back of the net in both games in 2017.
- Junior midfielder Pierre Byrne matched his career high in scoring with two goals.
- Freshman defender Jack Kielty had a day to remember, scoring the first goal of his career and tying for the team lead in ground balls with four and caused turnovers with two.
- Freshman Brian Willets notched his first goal of his Notre Dame career with a score to go along with an assist.
