Irish Track and Field Wraps Up Competition at Indiana Invitational

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Irish track and field squads wrapped up competition on a high note at the Indiana Invitational Sunday, earning 17 top-five finishes, including four first-place showings at the Harry Gladstein Fieldhouse in Bloomington.

The Irish took the top spot in the men’s 4×800-meter relay, while Eric Quick narrowly missed qualifying for the NCAA Championships and won the men’s long jump. Notre Dame also garnered first-place accolades from Joanna Schultz in the women’s 400-meter invitational and Nevada Sorenson in the women’s 60-meter hurdles.

The Irish return to the Loftus Sports Center next weekend when they host the Meyo Invitational Friday at Saturday.

Women’s 200m: Maddie Buttinger finished 10th with a time of 26.66. Loyola’s Devin Gosberry won the event in 25.34.

Men’s 60m Semis: Justin Schneider narrowly missed advancing to the final heat of the men’s 60-meter dash, finishing ninth with a time of 8.71. Indiana Tech’s Russell Dill was the top sprinter in 8.38.

Women’s 60m Hurdles Semis: Nevada Sorenson qualified for the 60-meter hurdle finals with a second-place finish and a time of 8.57 in the semifinal heat. Wright State’s Cassandra Lloyd clocked in at 8.52 to win the event. Maddie Buttinger finished 14th in the heat with a time of 9.49.

Women’s 60m Hurdles Final: Nevada Sorenson won the event with a time of 8.49, edging Wright State’s Cassandra Lloyd in second at 8.57.

Women’s Long Jump: Maddie Buttinger finished seventh with a jump of 5.02m (16-5 3/4). Nicki Mitchell, of Miami (Ohio), was the top jumper with a mark of 5.70m (18-8 1/2).

Men’s Long Jump: Eric Quick was the top men’s long jumper with a mark of 7.47m (24-6 1/4), edging Lincoln’s Gerald Bascoe in second at 7.17m (23-6 1/4) and Indiana’s Olumide Olamigoke in third at 7.15m (23-5 1/2).

Men’s Pole Vault: Kevin Schipper and Matt Schipper tied for second at 5.20m (17-0 3/4), just behind Indiana’s Jeffrey Coover at 5.50m (18-0 1/2).

Women’s 400m Dash: Samantha Williams finished 10th in the 31-runner field with a time of 58.36. Leander Ernest, running unattached, won the event with a time of 55.59, followed by Missouri State’s Yaneika Malcolm in second at 56.42 and Illinois State’s Sade Sealy in third with a time of 56.48.

Men’s 400m Dash: Matthew Brown clocked in at 50.06 to finish third, just behind Alexander Gill, unattached, in first at 49.66 and Rend Lake’s Andrew Hendrix in second at 49.74. Alex Korenstra finished fifth with a time of 50.35.

Men’s 800m: Zac Suriano finished fourth with a time of 1:55.49, while Justin Schneider was ninth in 1:57.58. Rend Lake’s Reginald Warren, Jr., won the event in 1:54.57.

Men’s High Jump: Doug Onuscheck finished third with a mark of 2.00m (6-6 3/4), behind Mississippi State’s Josh Tucker and Indiana’s Jared Nuxoll who tied for first at 2.05m (6-8 3/4).

Women’s 400m Invitational: Joanna Schultz was the top runner with a time of 55.72. Mississippi State’s Crystal Wilson was second at 55.80 and Lincoln’s Nyoka Cole finished third in 56.13.

Men’s 400m Invitational: Edward Hitchler finished third in 49.21, followed by Balazs Molnar in fifth at 49.41. Sean Wright, unattached, won the heat with a time of 48.52.

Women’s 800m Invitational: Indiana’s Lindsey Hartman won the event with a time of 2:10.68, followed by DePaul’s Mary Cate Quiett in second at 2:11.19 and Rebecca Tracy in third at 2:12.53. Abby Higgins was eighth with a time of 2:13.62.

Men’s 800 Invitational: Cameron Eckert finished third with a time of 1:53.61, followed by Blake Choplin in fifth at 1:54.61.

Men’s Shot Put: Denes Veres narrowly missed setting an NCAA provisional qualifying mark, finishing second with a toss of 17.60m (57-9). John Belcher finished fifth at 16.14m (52-11 1/2). Southeast Missouri’s Josh Uchtman won the event with a throw of 17.80m (58-4 3/4).

Women’s 4x800m Relay: Indiana clocked in at 9:03.11 to win the event, followed by the Irish in second at 9:03.66 and Marquette in third at 9:21.04.

Men’s 4x800m Relay: The Irish men won the heat with a time of 7:40.66, just ahead of Marquette in second at 7:41.89 and Loyola in third at 7:47.07.

Men’s 4x400m Relay: The Irish finished third in the 10-team field with a time of 3:16.82. Indiana was first in 3:16.13 and Lincoln finished third in 3:16.52.
