Irish Track and Field Set to Open Indoor Season with Blue and Gold Meet

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Irish track and field squads will open the 2009-10 indoor season Friday with the Blue and Gold Meet at the Loftus Center.

Notre Dame will host teams from DePaul, Detroit Mercy and Marquette at the one-day meet. The high jump and pole vault kick off the field events at 5:00 p.m. (EST), while the 60-meter hurdles begins the running events at 6:00 p.m.

The Irish return All-Americans Jaclyn Espinoza (throws) and Joanna Schultz (sprints), as well as three-time BIG EAST pole vault champion Matt Schipper and NCAA decathlon competitor Justin Schneider.

The Notre Dame men won the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships last season and were runners-up at the indoor meet, while the Irish women finished fourth at the indoor meet and fifth at the outdoor competition.

After sending four athletes to the NCAA Outdoor Championships, the women’s squad finished 24th with 11.5 points. The men sent three representatives and finished 48th.
