Irish Track and Field Sends 63 Student-Athletes to BIG EAST Championships

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Irish track and field teams will send 63 representatives to compete in the BIG EAST Championships this weekend at the Armory Track and Field Center in New York.

Events get underway Saturday at 8:00 a.m., and continue Sunday with another 8:00 a.m. start.

The men are coming off a runner-up finish at last year’s conference meet, while the women’s squad looks to improve on its fifth-place finish from a year ago.

The Irish enter the BIG EAST Championships holding several of the top conference marks. Jack Howard has the BIG EAST’s top 800-meter time at 1:48.60, while Johnathan Shawel’s 1,000-meter mark of 2:22.76 leads the league. Kevin and Matt Schipper are tied atop the conference standings in the pole vault with marks of 5.20m (17-0 3/4), and Denes Veres leads the BIG EAST in the shot put at 17.60m (57-9). On the women’s side, Joanna Schultz holds the second-place time in both the 400 and 500 meters with marks of 53.56 and 1:12.12, respectively.

The BIG EAST Conference will offer Web site coverage and streaming of the 2010 Indoor Track and Field Championships. BIGEAST.tv – the league’s online streaming platform – will offer a three-camera production for the championship.
