Irish Track and Field Sends 25 to NCAA East Regional

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Irish track and field teams are back to competition this week as they get set to compete at the NCAA East Regional held at Irwin Bell Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro, N.C.

Notre Dame will send 25 student-athletes to the regional contest with hopes of qualifying for the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Championships June 9-12 in Eugene, Ore.

Competition begins Thursday with the women’s javelin at 10:00 a.m. (ET), followed by the track events at 3:30 p.m. The men’s javelin gets underway Friday at 10:00 a.m. with the men’s 110-meter hurdles beginning the track events at 4:30 p.m. Competition wraps up Sunday, beginning with the men’s discus at 9:30 a.m., while the men’s 4×100-meter relay kicks off the running events at 6:00 p.m.

Several Irish student-athletes currently hold some of the top marks in the nation. Joanna Schultz ranks eighth in the women’s 400-meter hurdles at 56.82 and is 19th nationally in the 400-meter dash with a time of 52.88. Rebecca Tracy’s 1500-meter time of 4:20.18 ranks 31st. Denes Veres holds the ninth spot in the country with a shot put mark of 18.57m (60-11 1/4), while Kevin Schipper is 31st in the men’s pole vault at 5.26m (17-3).
