Irish Track and Field Opens Outdoor Season at Arizona State and Stanford

NOTRE DAME, ind. – The Irish track and field teams will open their outdoor season this weekend as they travel to Arizona State and Stanford for two meets.

The Arizona State Invitational will be held Friday and Saturday at Joe Sellah Track at Sun Angel Stadium. The men’s and women’s hammer throw will be Friday’s only event, beginning at 1:00 p.m. (PT). Saturday’s action gets underway at 10:00 a.m. with the women’s discus throw, while the women’s 100-meter hurdles starts the running events at 4:00 p.m.

The Stanford Invitational is scheduled for Friday and Saturday at Cobb Track and Angell Field. The meet kicks off at 9:00 a.m. (PT) Friday with the men’s javelin with running events beginning with the men’s 5000 meters at 11:00 a.m. The women’s hammer throw starts Saturday’s competition at 9:00 a.m., while the women’s 4×100-meter relay opens the running events at 12:10 p.m.

The Irish will look to carry over their success from the indoor season into outdoor competition. Notre Dame added an All-American and a BIG EAST title to its list of indoor honors. Jack Howard finished seventh in the men’s 800 meters at the NCAA Indoor Championships March 13 to earn his first All-America nod. The Irish men also claimed their fourth BIG EAST indoor crown in the last eight seasons.

The Notre Dame women finished sixth at the BIG EAST meet, and Joanna Schultz won her second conference 400-meter title and made her second straight appearance at the NCAA Indoor Championships.

The Irish return four NCAA Outdoor Championship competitors from last season, including All-American Jaclyn Espinoza, who finished third in the women’s discus throw in 2009. Justin Schneider competed in the men’s decathlon, finishing 20th, Schultz finished 26th in the women’s 400 meters and Matt Schipper finished ninth in his preliminary heat of the men’s pole vault.
