The 2022-23 Notre Dame swimming and diving season is now underway, and it could not have started better for first-year head swimming coach Chris Lindauer and third-year head diving coach Mark Bradshaw.

In a Friday and Saturday dual meet, the Irish emerged with four wins; both the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams each topped Pittsburgh and Penn State, each moving to 2-0 on the season. The women emerged victorious with a 206-147 win over the Panthers and a 187-166 win over the Nittany Lions. The men beat Pittsburgh 212.5-140.5 and Penn State 226-125.

The Panther men and women are now 1-0 and 0-1, respectively, while the Nittany Lion men and women are 1-3 and 3-1, respectively.

Overall, Notre Dame posted 38 top-three finishes in individual events, and the Irish won six of the eight relays. Seven of those individual top-three victories were achieved by freshmen Daniel Knapp, Tate Bacon, Tommy Janton and Marcus Gentry in the first collegiate meet of their careers.

Staying on the men’s side, senior Jack Hoagland picked up right where he left off during his sophomore season — Hoagland missed last year due to injury — notching three wins in the 500 (4:24.78) and 1000 freestyle (9:12.53) plus the 400 IM (3:54.23). School record holder Chris Guiliano won the 100 freestyle (44.15) and was narrowly out-touched in the 50 (20.09) to earn the No. 2 spot.

Additional impressive performances include Sean Faikish’s 200 IM victory (1:51.37) as well as Kaden Smesko’s 100 backstroke gold (48.20).

The aforementioned Knapp was by far Notre Dame’s best diver of the meet, although fellow freshman Ben Nguyen’s fourth place finish in the 3-meter event was a great way to kick off his Irish career.

Turning to the women’s side, senior Coleen Gillilan earned two first place finishes (100 breaststroke — 1:02.44 and 200 IM — 2:04.23) and two second place finishes (100 fly — 54.49 and 200 fly — 2:02.38). The 2022 NCAA qualifier continues to be one of the most versatile members of the women’s team.

Sophomore Madelyn Christman, a swimmer to watch per Lindauer, earned a 200 backstroke victory (1:58.92) and took third in the 200 IM (2:05.48) to start her second year in South Bend. Junior Kallie Chelsvig took the silver in the 200 backstroke (1:59.15). Christman and Chelsvig were the only two swimmers below the 2:00 mark in the women’s event at the meet.

The 400 free relay (3:22.70) composed of Chelsvig and Christman plus freshmen Gretchen Lueking and Grace Brenneman out-touched the Nittany Lions by 0.51 to conclude the women’s meet, a promising finish from a relay with three underclassmen.

Sophomore diver Calie Brady continued to impress after a standout freshman season, winning the 3 meter event (331.90) and taking third in the 1 meter. Michigan graduate transfer Allie Klein proved to be a good addition for Bradshaw’s group, taking second and third in the 1 and 3 meter events, respectively (287.00 and 269.80).

The Irish are back in action at home against Louisville on Nov. 11. It will be Notre Dame’s alumni meet as Lindauer faces his alma mater in his first contest at the Rolfs Aquatic Center.
