NOTRE DAME, Ind. – A goal from senior forward Steven Perry (Edmond, Okla./Bishop McGuinness) in the 84th minute proved to be the game winner as the Notre Dame men’s soccer team topped Providence 2-1 in BIG EAST play on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Stadium. The goal was Perry’s team-best fifth of the season.

Notre Dame (4-2-3, 2-0-0) struck first in the 12th minute as senior forward Jeb Brovsky (Lakewood, Colo./Green Mountain) deposited his first goal of the season with the assist going to sophomore midfielder Dillon Powers (Plano, Texas/Plano Senior). Powers headed the ball to Brovsky, who headed it into the left side of the netting. Powers has a team-high three assists this season.

Providence (5-3-1, 0-2-0) evened the contest on an own goal in the 16th minute. The sequence began with a Friar free kick just outside the left side of the18-yard box. After the initial kick was blocked, the Irish could not clear the ball and it was knocked into the goal.

The Friars nearly grabbed the lead with just under 20 minutes left in the first half as Greg Davis made a run into the left side of the box and flicked the ball to the near post and Notre Dame senior goalkeeper Philip Tuttle (Hooksett, N.H./Brewster Academy) made the stop. Tuttle, who was making his second start of the season, had four saves on the day to earn his first win of the campaign. Providence goalkeeper Jhojan Obando made three saves.

Providence produced the first good look for either team in the second half as Wilder Arboleda sent a shot on frame from 16 yards out that was saved by Tuttle. The Irish goalkeeper made another key save in the 69th minute as he jumped to prevent a David Datilus shot from reaching the back of the net.

The Fighting Irish started to produce chances of their own midway through the second half. In the 76th minute, Obando saved a Harrison Shipp (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) shot from eight yards out and a Friar defender blocked the follow up from Perry. Just over a minute later, Irish senior defender Greg Klazura (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic) sent a blast on goal from 17 yards out that was saved by Obando.

Notre Dame’s pressure paid off with just over five minutes left in regulation as sophomore Kyle Richard (Louisville, Ky./Saint Xavier) sent a cross into Perry and the senior scored from eight yards away. Perry has scored a goal in each of the past three matches. It was the first career point for Richard.

“Steven (Perry) has been making some great chances for us,” said Irish head coach Bobby Clark. “He makes great runs and it was nice for him to get that goal.”

Providence out shot Notre Dame 13-10 for the match, yet the Irish held a 5-4 edge in shots during the second half. The Friars had 10 corner kicks compared to five for Notre Dame. Both teams had four corner kicks in the second stanza.

“We struggled a little bit in the first half,” added Clark. “They (Providence) were working harder for it. This is the lowest number of shots that we’ve had this season. I felt we opened the game well and we got the early goal but then we let them back in it. I felt they (Providence) earned their goal. They are a direct team and they have big guys and they got their corner kicks into the box. They made life difficult for us, but I felt we had a whole new urgency in the second half.”

The Fighting Irish return to action at Indiana on Wednesday, October 6. The game is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. (ET) kickoff at Bill Armstrong Stadium. Note the time change since the match originally was scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
